My story is a tad weird. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 17 and put on BC pills and just tolerated the weight gain and hairy neck and chest until recently since I was told I couldn't do anything about it. Found a doctor last year who was willing to let me try out Metformin even though my hormone levels seemed to be under control and I immediately lost 30Lbs without so much as even thinking about my diet or exercise! I went off it because of side effects like nausea that were interfering with my job and have slowly been putting weight on and am back to horrible periods and headaches which had eased up for awhile. I also noticed that my excess hair is growing faster than ever!! Yuck!
Anyway, after a few check ups and being told that aside from ovarian cysts that everything else looks normal; this new doctor put me back on metformin thanks to my begging for it now that I am working from home and can deal with the nausea that it may cause again. She also put me on 25mg daily of Spironolactone which she said will help the excess hair growth. She was afraid to start me out at a higher dose in fear that it would lower my blood pressure and it turns out that during my check up my blood pressure is already a little bit low! Wtf?!
Anyway, Iam wondering if anyone else is taking both? Should I even bother with the Spiro or just stick with Met? And can anyone reccomend a doctor/specialist in the Toronto area that actually knows more about PCOS??
I would love to hear anyone elses experiences with these meds before I take my first dose!
I was put on Glumetza after being on regular metformin since 2003 and not being able to tollerate the met (it prity much kept me house bound while I was on it - made trying to work outside the home next to impossible, and ment no social life what so ever for me).
Since i was placed on the glumetza two months ago, its been way better - glumetza is the time release version of metformin. My body is tollerating it much better then it ever did the regular met.
You might see about going on the glumetza to see if it works for you over the regular met.

Toronto also has the only PCOS clinic in Canada. You might want to look into getting a referral for the clinic.
I second that! Don't know much about the meds you are on so I can't be of help there, but I have been a patient of the PCOS clinic for awhile now. Dr.Sheila Laredo is great. It is a busy clinic, so you may have to wait awhile for a referral....and each visit is one to two hours (typical of seeing any specialist), but I have found it to be worthwhile.

Started TTC in Sep/07, with low GI diet and acupuncture.
4 cycles of Clomid Oct/08-Jan/09; all BFN.
Break from TTC from Feb/09-Jul/09 due to endometriomas on both ovaries. Laparoscopy on 06/30.
Just sharing my experience w/ Spiro - worth it. I definitely notice a difference on it. Not sure of the ramifications of being on met and spiro so you are the best to judge that. My experience w/ spiro is that the facial and body hair is finer...so much so that I don't have to see my aesthetician as often.
And after I type that I realize, you can't see links yet. Come back and check on that after you get 10 ;-)
Spiro /Met shows no interactions, but I would second the suggestion of asking for Glumetza. I just started it, and find no side effects. My biggest problem with Met was as soon as I went over 1000 mg, I got dizzy spells, so the doc switched me to Glumetza in hopes that i'll be able to go to 2000 mg without much problem...
As long as you're not TTC than Spiro is fine for ya... it takes a while to see results on it, so just be patient!
GL!
