I'm new to this board, although I was diagnosed with PCOS about 15 years ago. I don't have insulin resistance, but my big problems are unwanted hair and weight gain (atypical PCOS weight gain, I think -- mostly in my bottom half).
My apologies if this is the wrong place. Since my questions span several categories, I thought I'd post in the general area. I have a few dilemmas and was hoping to get some advice from expert cysters.
First, I have been taking eulexin for years now (based on an email convo with Kat!) and had great results with it, but the obgyn who prescribed it continually makes me jump through hoops for it. My annual exam is in August, but my prescription has run out. Instead of giving me a two month prescription to tide me over, my gyn wants me to come in face-to-face and give me the prescription, but the exam wouldn't be included in that visit. This office also refuses to bill my insurance company, making me pay for it up front, and my insurance company always finds a reason not to pay it. So I can't afford a 10-minute "oh, here's your prescription" visit and the annual exam two months later. I'm ready to start looking for a new doc. Am I overreacting? Are there any obgyns in Ohio who prescribe it, preferably female?
Second, I have no idea how to do the weight loss thing. I also have Crohn's Disease (triggered after being involved in a Metformin study, actually) and my body continually goes through the feast-famine cycle. I routinely go through a 75 pound gain and loss. I know my PCOS makes it worse, but I can't do the normal low carb thing. Here's the problem: I can't eat dairy, soy, or wheat, I can only eat vegetables or fruits in small quantities when I'm flaring (which is at least once a month), and I'm a vegetarian. Rice is a staple for me, as almost all "allergen-free" foods contain rice. At the moment, my body holds on to *everything* it takes in. I have some definite limitations on exercise as well, although I did find a recumbent bike that I can handle.
How on earth do I balance this? I can't diet much because of my nutritional problems and I have to be super-careful to take of myself. My hormones are so screwed. My health and body are so fragile, and I'll be facing surgery again in a few months. Right now I'm about 75-80 pounds overweight, which is made worse because I'm only 5'3". I'm miserable, depressed, and desperate. Help?

I can't answer the prescription question or about insurance but what I can help with is the weight loss question.
Usually I would recommend the Insulin Resistance Diet book but since you are not IR and you're going through the swings - have you ever tried a diet that is low GI?
Low GI (or Glycemic Index) is basically a diet where you choose to eat foods that are low on the Glycemic Index. These foods release sugars slowly unlike most regular foods that give you a sugar spike and high and then a low on the back end.
The slow burn effect of low GI diets helps you to stay fuller longer and not crave food so badly.
You can get books on low GI on Amazon or at the library - there's also quite a bit of info online - the Australian research organisation CSIRO has authored perhaps one of the most popular books on this subject.
When I want to ditch weight - my own regimen consists of drinking lots of water - going low sugar and avoiding processed foods and white flour.
Thanks for the warm welcome, Eva. Everyone here seems so nice and supportive.
I took your advice, PaulaLouise, and got a few books on the Glycemic Index at the library yesterday. Now I just need to get some exercise motivation and I'll be all set.
