I'm 22 years old and me and my boyfriend have been ttc for a few months with no luck. I have not officially been diagnosed with pcos however my gyn believes I have it as I have a lot of the typical signs. My periods were I guess somewhat normal until 15 then at 15 they came every few months and eventually stopped. Unless I was on bc my periods wouldn't come. I started bc in sept 07 and stopped in sept 08 and since then I have had a period every every month lastin 4 or 5 days but the length in between varies. We now want to have a child and I'm scared I won't be able to. I have a reg doc appt on the 2nd and a gyn appt on the 10th. I want to know basically what I need to tell my doctor(s) in order to get them to figure out whether or not I have pcos? And I want to know what I could do to raise my chances of conception?
welcome to sc what id suggest is to write down everything that you want to ask/say to your dr so you dont forget. Thats what i always do. here is a link to the ttc section of sc for you
At your appt they will probably do an ultrasound and some bloodwork to determine whether you have PCOS. That is how I was diagnosed. My LH/FSH ratio was very off on the bloodwork, and the ultrasound showed the classic "string of pearls". My periods were very irregular and I often skipped months at a time. Check out the link Eva posted, and good luck.

If it gives you any peace of mind, I conceived my daughter in 2004 unknown to me that I had PCOS, but it's pretty evident that I've had it most of my reproductive life. I miscarried January 2003 at about 4/5 weeks and then conceived my daughter Sept 2004 (so it took about 18 months) after losing about 25 lbs. So, I never gave second thought to having PCOS--in fact, nobody ever explained that such a syndrome existed. In hindsight, I believe that my miscarriage, preterm labor with my daughter and of course, my inability to ovulate and conceive these last two years are due to PCOS.
So, I'm sorry that you're worried about getting pregnant, but IT IS possible to get pregnant and have children with PCOS. I'm hoping to be blessed with another child soon. I'm seeing a Reproductive Endocrinologist which I was referred to by my OB/GYN and that seems to have "the ball rolling."
so i went to my regular doctor appt. they tested my glucose and cholestrol and said it was within acceptable limits. i also had my thyroid tested a while back and it was normal to. can i not be insulin resistant and still have pcos?
Did they do a gluclose Tolerance Test? They take a series of blood tests at set intervals over several hours before and after you consume a sugar drink to see how your body reacts. Get them to do one of these. Simply checking your Glucose levels is not always adequate.
Also have you had your hormone levels checked? Make sure they test your Testosterone, Free Androgens (and get a %) and also your LH & FSH and get a ratio - the LH & FSH should be pretty similar. If your LH is double or higher than your FSH then that is suggestive of PCOS.
An ultrasound will help to see if you have any cysts, but even if you don't have many cysts you can still have PCOS if you have the other symptoms and suggestive hormone levels, though not ALL doctors will agree. Many are diagnosed based on symptoms & blood work alone and never even have an US, though it is still a good idea to get one done.
As others have said, write everything down, and start doing it now, so when your appointment comes around you won't forget!
Good luck xxx I hope you get teh answers you are looking for.
Yes, you most definitely can have PCOS but not be insulin resistant. That is the case for me. Like I said, I had the LH/FSH ratio problem, elevated androgens, and the cysts. My sugars have always been totally normal and I have no insulin resistance and am on the thin side. There are many manifestations of PCOS and everyone is a little different.

i went to my gyn appt. told him what was going on. he ran blood work for testoterone and prolactin. which both came back normal. he also felt my ovaries and cervix and uterus said that all felt normal. and told me if the blood work comes back normal then come back and see him in a year. this is frustrating because i still feel like i havent reached a diagnosis. as of now my periods have been coming every month since stopping birthcontrol about 6 months ago. but i have no clue if im ovulating or not.
Maybe you should get a second opinion. Maybe try a Reproductive Endo since they specialize with PCOS. It still surprises me how little many OBGYNs know about PCOS. Those bloodtests are good, but he really should have ordered some other tests too, esp your LH and FSH levels to see the ratio and done an ultrasound of your ovaries. I'm not sure feeling your ovaries/uterus, cervix quite cuts it. They should do an ultrasound, the cysts in PCOS are very small, not something a doctor could feel, at least that was my impression.

I guess it depends on your insurance. I have a PPO so I can go anywhere in network without a referral. If you have an HMO you need a referral from your family doctor (PCP). It took me a few months to get an appt with the RE that I specifically wanted. It was worth the wait though because I was pg pronto!!

Hi,
I just wanted to say hello, I'm currently in the same situation as you. Im 22, Ive had my gynae appt, they have taken blood for the second time (first time they said the results are within normal levels but the ratio between 2 hormones might indicate something) & I am waiting for a referral for an ultrasound. Once I have had my U/S I will get another appt with gynae to get the results of blood tests & U/S. I know how worrying it can be waiting for appt with no answers. Ive got approx a 6 week wait for U/S, have you managed to get one yet?
Hello everyone, i am new to this site and i was wanting to know about a few things. I have PCOS and i have had ever since i was 18 years old and i am 24 years old now. I am insulin resistance, my gyn says that my body produces to much insulin. Anyways, i am married and i have been for 3 years now and my husband and i are ready to start a family and it is very frustrating for me because i can't give him a child that he wants and the child that i want but he is a good man he is being very patient. Well i looked online and got this infertility drug called Ovulex that required for me and him to both take. (he got a bottle and so did i) Well needless to say it didnt work. I have heard on insulin sensitizers, clomiphene citrate and letrozol and so on and i just wanted to know what is the best direction i can take with positive results. That i can bring forth to my gyn and ask so please anyone out there that is willing to help please help me...thanks for taking your time out and i hope everyone is having a great morning!!!!
