Hi--I'm new to this board but am glad that I found it. I need some help here--I was diagnosed with Alopecia when I was in the 3rd grade, around 12 years ago and am now wondering if that was the first clue to PCOS? I lost about 95% of my hair from my head, eye lashes, arms, etc but now it is like I have an excess of it--around my upper lip, below my belly button, around my chest area but the hair on the top of my head is fine if I continue with my Rogaine. At first the Dr's were baffled and thought it was due to an weak immune system but now I'm starting to wonder if it wasn't part of PCOS but would have that been to early? My sister has PCOS but just got diagnosed last year and then my symptoms started to show but she had the irregular cylces and weight gain, I had the irregular cycles, weight gain, acne and hair loss/excess so am just wondering if at age 8 would have been to young or if they could have caught this before everything got roally screwed up?

Anne, there is a lot of evidence that PCOS can start having an effect on your body when you are quite young. I know I was diagnosed when I was a little girl, though I didnt' have any symptoms until I was much older.
Were you diagnosed with Alopecia Areata or Alopecia Totalis when you were that age? If so, those are completely separate conditions that cause hair loss, that are not related to PCOS. They are cause by immune dysfunction. That kind of hair loss isn't the same kind we see in PCOS. PCOS hairloss is essentially female pattern or male pattern hairloss that doesn't affect the rest of your face and body, and start AFTER you have been through puberty or usually later. Alopecia at age 8 that affects your lashes, etc., was probably not related to PCOS.
