Hi! I was just diagnosed with PCOS yesterday after knowing that SOMETHING was going on with my body for about a year and a half. I have some questions for you ladies. My doctor put me on Metformin(I think that's the name, I'm sure yall know what I'm talking about). Anyway, my question is, will the medicine stop my hair loss possibly and if so how soon? Also, if you have experience with this, did you ever regrow some of your lost hair? Obviously from my user name and my question you can guess that hair loss is my biggest symptom and what prompted me to know something wasn't right in my body.
I'm sorry you all have been diagnosed with this too, but I have to say, it's nice that there is someone to ask this.
Well I don't really have any answers for that type of question...sorry!!!!
Anyway, welcome you have come to the right place. Everyone here is GREAT!!!!

Welcome to SC!! Well, I can offer a little info. About two years ago I started losing my hair. I went to my dr. and he tested my thyroid (my entire family has thyroid issues)...it came back fine and no further tests were ordered. The hair loss continued for a little while and then it just stopped. So I didn't think about it much anymore. All of my hair grew back by the way!! Another year passed and I started having other symptoms and went to a different doctor and she immediately tested me for PCOS and here i am :-) I am pretty sure that the Met will stop your hair loss, so will controlling your insulin resistance if you are Insulin Resistant. Once you get PCOS by the horns, it is pretty easy to control in my opinion as long as you do what you have to do to keep it at bay. Hope this helps. And remember...you aren't alone!!!

I'm brand new here, too, so it's nice to "meet" you! I was diagnosed last week with PCOS and developing IR; hair loss is one of my symptoms, and I was also prescribed Metformin, so I've done some research on it. From what I have read, your symptoms should slowly get resolved on Met, but it could take as long as a year for you to really start seeing results. Met treats the CAUSE of the problem, not the symptoms, so if your hair loss is really severe, or if you don't see results as fast as you'd like to, you might consider talking with your dr about a drug specifically used to treat hair loss that would be safe in combo w/ the Met. Hope this helps!
