Hey I'm new, I was just diagnosed Monday Oct 2 with PCOS, just doing some research and ran across this site. Hope to learn lots, don't really know where to begin, I'm seeing my doc again here in three months, so what is the success some of you have had with using birth control?
Before my diagnosis I had very irregular, very heavy periods. I was put on BCP (no diagnosis yet) and they did help me to have one period a month. But the periods were still extremely heavy and (TMI warning) full of old blood and clots. So when I found a new doc and was diagnosed, he put me on metformin, and it was a lifesaver. I still had one period per month, but it was a regular flow. I was able to go off BCP before long and the met took care of my cycles by itself. (I also lost weight and got pregnant with met, don't know if those are issues for you). Anyway, that's just my experience, I'm sure other cysters will share theirs with you too.
It's nice to have you here, if you want to ask any questions or want to talk, I'm here for you.
Hugs
Jenny

Hello Kira and WELCOME to SC!
I don't know what I can say that would help you more than Jenny already has.
I have a similiar experience as Jenny as well.
I was very thankful for BCP because it started my periods again.
I had precancerous cells and regaining my monthly flow helped to correct it and thank God I am cancer free!
I too had a great experience with the Metformin...as a matter of fact it was life changing for me!
I wish you all the best as you continue to figure all of this out!
I am on BCP's and have been for 3 years. it does help regulate your periods and your hormone levels but i wish i had something a little stronger sometimes it feels as if it's not working. I don't know. good luck and welcome!!!

Hello Kira, Welcome! I'm glad you found this site The ladies here have helped me so much and i'm sure they will do the same for you!
When i got diagnosed i was going to be on BCP and Metformin. But after i started taking the Met it worked really well for me so i didn't have to take BCP. Met regulated my periods, hormones and insulin. I've been feeling pretty good since i started taking it.
Hope that helps, Best wishes

Thanks so much for the posts, we have SO much in common, your story sounds a lot like mine too Jenny, I've been on so many different bcp, this is a totally different one, but I'm going back again in Jan to talk about how I'm doing and stuff.
Should I be conserned about my sister, she already has pre-cervical cancereous cells?
bcp pills in MY experience made everythign worse for me! i became very depressed and solid AF (4-5 mnths realy heavy) and the prob with bcp are that it only really masks the symptoms and when u come off them its all still there and neeeds treating - and some pcos women should never be put on bcp!! personally i think met is a better option! xxx

HELLO everyone!!!!!
i'm new too, and so glad i found your forum. here is my story
was diagnosed with PCOS some months ago, by gynecologist who then "prescribed" me a pregnancy in order to treat pcos..he said 'go on the combined pill, vitamin E, folic acid for about 3 monts then try to get pregnant. if you can you can if you cannot then come along and we'll do a laprascopy for you'...this is how pcos is being treated in my country...there are no other options he said...sad, but they even dont know about the link between pcos and insulin resistance... well i moved from there and now got my appointment at the uk gynecologist in Nov. So i'm nerves now waiting for that appointment and dont really know what to expect, so dissapointed already with general practitioner who even didnt know much about PCOS and couldnt reffer me to endocrinologist because he said you've got to wait 6-8months to see them so i'll try and have all the tests (because in my country to diagnose doc just listened to my complaints and then done an external scan and then written 'pcos') so really don't know anything about my glucose levels etc.
My syptoms are really heavy: had PCOS over 10 years (oh if only i knew that..), very thin and greasy hair, hirsutism, irregular periods etc etc
But I'm very enthusiastic that i know my condition now and really can do something to keep it at bay. So now I'm eating healthily as much as i can, taking also some vitamins
As for a birth control pill, i have been taking it for 3 months, cant say that I had any bad side effects apart from terrible depression in the very begining, but now its ok. Didnt see any improvements with hair either....but at least hair on my chin is growing more slower than before
The only worry of mine is my periods with BCP are very very light.
so that's it really, my "short-long" story and introduction
and of course, i'm very happy to see you all here, so much easy to cope with pcos knowing that you are not alone
thanks!!!!!!!

i see you're trying to conceive, good luck with it!
