Hello there! I'm Jess and I'm 15 years old. I'm almost positive I have PCOS although I haven't yet visited a doctor about it. I have symptoms such as increased facial and body hair growth(torso, knuckles, feet, you name it), acne(since I could sweat!), and weight issues(though I'm working on it...). I've recently noticed a few spots which I believe to be skin tags. I've had an irregular history of menstrual cycles, also. Last year a couple of my periods started getting heavier and lasting for 10 days. My next couple of periods were the lightest I've ever had. After that my period completely stopped for seven months, and I've only just gotten it back in mid-May. I can't tell yet whether or not it is regular again. I've tried to tell my mother about all this, but she doesn't take me very seriously as she has never even heard of PCOS. Is there any advice you could give me about getting this checked out? Should I make an appointment with a gynecologist? Also, what should I expect on the visit? Thanks so much if you read all or any of this, I really appreciate it!
hey jess! i had a lot of the same symptoms you're having and the first doctor i saw was my dermatologist who said it sounded like PCOS but he couldn't diagnose it so I went to my regular doctor but she couldn't diagnose it either so finally I saw a gynecologist and she officially diagnosed it. Your best bet is a gynecologist. They will tell you the next step to take once they've determined what it is you have.
I know it is difficult to deal with PCOS in your adolescence; I'm 19 and found out about it when I was 18 (not only that, I found out the day before I started college!) so if you need a shoulder to cry on, I'm here for you, and so is everyone else on SoulCysters
Hey I am new here too and I am also waiting for a diagnosis.
My GP is pretty much positive that have it I'm just waiting for a scan appointment to come through from the hospital.
My periods have always been irregular for the whole 7 years that i have been having them. I have so far only had 3 this year && the worst gap was 8 months. =/
As I am new to this I can't really advise you much. sorry. Just wantedto let you know that yor not alone.
Hi people... I am a newbie here. I'm 18 from singapore. Seriously i am suspecting i do have PCOS.
I feel i am alone cos i dun see anyone have the same problem around. I always feel so sad and depress. Reason being i cant be like any other girls on the street whereby they can always wear sleeveless and tube. Unfortunately i cant. I mean which female wouldnt want to look pretty? For me i always have got to stick to my shirt and nothing esle.
And i serious wondering hard what's the use of god creating human with hair. Maybe i am complainting too much. But girls with too much excessive hair would understand how bad it feels.
Only recently i am suspecting myself having PCOS. Yet i havent been to any doctors. I dont dare to tell anyone. Neither my family nor bf. Maybe they wont mind but I MIND. I admit i dont have the couarge at all. I seriously dont know how guys will react. I cant even accept myself- hairy, let alone hoping my bf will accept. Also being a student, i am not financial capable to visit a specialist, thats why. I am wondering if going to a family doctor is good enough. And i seriously SERIOUSLY pray and wish and beg hard i can shed off my body hair. I cant care much even if i sounded insane or what. Soon my emotions is going to over take me. I am so damn sad to be told that even PCOS is under control, hair growth will still persist forever... OMG.
Also i am still in confusion. I am pretty slim, i do have my period every month abt the same time. I just have hairy skin (body and facial) and some pimples here and there (my acne reduce alot by the way). But 1. Could i lead to infertility (if i dont se doctor) despite my regular period? 2. Will i have diabetes 2 one day if i dont get myself examine?
True, PCOS does raise the risk of Type II Diabetes so what's highly suggested is that you exercise daily, minimize sugar and refined carbs, eat plenty of whole grains, and lean proteins. Also, drink plenty of water. In terms of fertility, it's not something I am concerned about since I am not even dating or sexually active, but if you are concerned, you should definitely consult a doctor.

I'll jump on the bandwagon here. I am 16 and also undiagnosed, yet. I've got an appointment in January with an endocrineologist. But alot of these symptoms are ringing bells and I feel the same feelings of wondering why I'm not like the other girls around me. I am struggling lot with changing my my diet and routine. I'm a sedimentary person who always needs to be chewing something or tinkering with something. So that's a problem.

It sounds like PCOS to me, those are very similar to the symptoms I had at that age. It's kind of a scary thing, I know, but there are ways to deal with it. My biggest piece of advice- iwould definitely find a gynecologist you trust who can help you through it! I made the mistake of sticking with someone whom i didn't much care for!
Good luck with all of this, it'll be ok, I promise!!
Hope no-one minds me buttin in here but it seems the right place, sorry if its not. I am also undiagnosed, ive never had a steady period, sometimes i would bleed for a couple of hours and others i would bleed for two months at a time. i have been seeing a doctor about this for 6 years now, had overian cysts removed and now because nothing else has worked my doctor has put me on an injection to try and regulate my periods. i saw a different doctor yesterday who suggested i may have PCOS and sent me to see another doctor who is refering me for a scan. Until yesterday i had never heard of PCOS so im not sure. i dont seem to have the other symtoms mentioned by others above me apart from i have seemed to put on quite a bit of weight. so i really am not sure.
i've heard that you don't have to have cysts to have PCOS...and it's a very tricky diagnosis; sometimes dr.'s misdiagnose it. what symptoms do you have?

I have basically every other symptom except acne (hooray!) and my bloodwork showed up all the right (technically wrong but you know what I mean) things, but the doctor did say before she sent me for the test that not everyone has cysts. She also said that if the test didn't show anything up I can still have medication to sort out the hormonal imbalances...which will be nice!
well consider yourself lucky you don't have acne! that was something i struggled with for a VERY long time--ever since I was 15 i was on every kind of topical and oral acne medicine and nothing worked. then when I was 18 my dermatologist suggested i might have PCOS but he couldn't diagnose it nor did he suggest anything to handle the excess hair and uncontrollable acne. I ended up being put on Spironolactone by the first gyno that I saw but the spiro only made my periods come way too often (after trying 4 different types of the Pill they all really messed up my hormones and gave me really bad depression, nausea, and all sorts of other bad side effects) so I'm off the spiro now but with some good skin care products my skin is a lot clearer.
nice to hear your skins clearin up, i go through phases of bad acne, some days i can be totally clear where others i am covered in it.
had my letter from hospital today, with my date for my ultrasound next week, hopefully then i may get some answers.
