Cool new here w/ questions

Hi my name is Dana I'm 44 and was diagnosed by my RE with PCOS in 2000 while trying to get PG.
My DD is now 6 almost 7yrs old.

So while new to the board ..I'm NOT new to the disease

My PCOS has been left untreated since I found out I was PG in Jan '01
I'm shocked how many OBGYNs and MDs know so little about it
So there for won't treat it

I have had 2 panic attacks in the past year that have landed me in the Hospital.
Is there really a link between PCOS and Anxiety/Panic attacks???
I am Depo Provera shots every 3 mos for Birth Control
and was finally put on meds for the Anxiety in May of this year
I'm on Clexa 4Omgs and Xanax for flare-ups.
I'm also curious how PCOS effects menopause and if my anxiety /panic symptoms are related to menopause.

Wish I had known about this board years ago I'm learning so much

Hi Dana, sorry I don't know enough to answer any of your questions, but wanted to say welcome!

I hope someone wanders along soon to help you out.

First off, let me say that I work within the mental health field. I am not sure if PCOS and anxiety/panic attacks are related. Anxiety and panic can simply be related to the things that are going on in your life and the way that you are managing them. Anxiety has also been linked to genetics - try to remember if your mother, father and other family members had issues with anxiety and panic. I encourage you to do some online research about anxiety. You can learn all kinds of techniques to reduce anxiety and panic. It takes work and practice (hey, what doesn't). Relaxation techniques in combination with drugs work great.

On a side note - be careful with the Xanax, it is highly addictive and is a ***** to get off of (bad withdrawals). Make sure psych drugs are monitored by a psychiatrist - medical doctors aren't always knowledgable about these drugs.

I have read on several different websites that they seem to think there is a link between PCOS and anxiety/depression. I have had both at different points in my life and I am currently on Zoloft for anxiety. I know a couple of other people diagnosed with PCOS and they are on meds for anxiety or depression as well. I don't know how dependable the information I've read is, but my OBGYN seems to think they are connected as well. Good luck and welcome to the site!
