I'm Nicole, a 25-year-old from Houston. I was just diagnosed with PCOS Friday. I've had several of the symptoms for quite some time now, but never realized they were all related.
I went in for a visit with my OBGYN, and in conversation, realized I may have PCOS. She referred me to an endocrinologist, and sure enough... after having several viles of blood drawn and tests run... I have PCOS.
My body does not react well to BCP, so she has put me on Metformin ER. I started the meds yesterday, and so far I don't feel much different. I was worried they might make me feel funny... but so far, so good.
For a long time now, I've been very frustrated. Though my diet isn't terrible, I've steadily put on weight (40 lbs this year alone), I have problems with acne (even though ProActiv previously kept my face clear for years), I've had random hair that would "sprout" from my chin that resembled an eyebrow hair and would need to be plucked, etc. Plus, my cycle has been incredibly irregular for years... and when I do have one, it's ridiculously heavy and long.
Now that I know there is a reason for all this, I'm looking forward to seeing these symptoms diminish and hopefully (eventually) become almost non-existent. I know PCOS isn't curable, but it is treatable and I'm very encouraged.
I'm looking forward to being a part of this forum!
welcome to sc ive been on met for years, and find it great. I find that as long as i avoid greasy/fatty/sugar foods as much as poss, and always eat with the met i am ok with it.
here is a link to the metformin section of sc for you http://www.soulcysters.net/metformin/
Thanks to everyone who has welcomed me. I have not had any side effects from the Met. I am on Met ER though, so that might be why. I've never been on regular Met to know the difference. I just hear Met ER has fewer side effects.
Welcome Nicole! I'm glad you're here. I'm also new - just diagnosed a week ago myself. I also had symptoms for years and, as a result of TTC, have discovered what's apparently been going on for years! It's such a relief to have an answer and be able to get treatment, isn't it!
3 rounds Clomid - Sept-Nov '08 - no response
1st RE appt - 12/29 - PCOS Dx
Started 500 mg Met XR Jan '09 and worked my way up to 2000 mg after 4 months of trying - bad GI issues
HSG Feb '09 - good results
Horomone panel Aug '09 - high DHEAS level 390 - prescribed Dex
Starting Dex next cycle
Letrazole w/ Ovidrel cycle after that???
Currently waiting on flow - silly body!
Hi Nicole and welcome to SC! I am in Houston (well a little north in Spring) as well! It feels good once you have a dx and know what you're up against. I was dx'd in Sept 07 after TTC for a year with no luck and very irregular cycles. I got pg in March but mc'd at about 6 wks, but it was a suprise and I wasn't straight with my Thyroid and Diabtes yet. But after having strict control of my meds and diet I am 13 wks pg. THere is hope and you are definately looking at it the right way! Good luck and I hope to see you around the boards!

Hi. Thanks for the encouraging words! I hope you're doing well!
I just joined the site today. I am in Houston as well and was diagnosed with PCOS in December. I had a m/c in March of last year and after TTC for several more months, with no luck on Clomid, my OB referred me to a RE
I had my first baseline u/s today and found a cyst on my ovary. I'm awaiting the blood results of my estrogen level to see if I can start my round of meds. This will be my first month on Femara and Ovidrel. Hopefully I can start them and I will get a BFP.
Hi Nicole, I'm 26 from toronto and new too to SC but i have been diagnosed in 2002, but back then I was young and didn't have my own money to get treated. So now that I'm earning i am doing all I can to take charge of my health. I come back and read the threads here everyday to inspire me. And you being encouraged and hopeful really makes me happy that I'm not alone in this battle with PCOS.
