New legal TV commercial about Yaz and Yasmin complications
So last night I saw a TV commercial of a law firm seeking people who've had a blot clot, stroke, heart attack, or gallblader disease caused by Yaz or Yasmin for possible compensation. You know, those law firm TV ads saying "Have you been a victim of this" associated with a prescription medication. Well, I've always known Yaz and Yasmin were associated with those side effects but normally you don't see those TV ads unless there's been in increase with those complications and a law suit has come about. It really scared me, as I take Yasmin and have been thinking about going off it...now I really want to get off it. Has anyone else seen this ad and feeling like I am? I'm concerned and not sure what I should do.

Yes, I was actually going to post this tonight, and saw your thread instead. It is true. You can read about it on the internet. I used to take this about 1 year ago and my insurance ran out and I had to stop taking it as it is the highes BCP out there. I have a friend who is on this and is getting ready to stop yaz because she has a heart condition and it has really made her sick this year. So all I can say for those whom are taking yaz plz check into this, it even says it will cause death suddenly.
I just quit taking it on Friday. I have been having a horrible pain in my groin and going down the inside of my thigh. It was getting progressively worse so I went to the emergency room. I was thankful that it wasn't a blood clot, just a strained groin. The ER doctor told me that blood clots are more common than we think. I am just tired of the stress of it and I am tired on my gyn minimizing my fears. The pill for me just isn't worth it anymore!

My doctor's office called me and took me off of Yasmin so now I'm on the Nuva ring

I wonder if I should just stop taking it? Now I have six boxes of Yasmin because of Medco messing up my first refill order. They don't accept returns of course so I'm stuck with 6 months worth of it!

I know that it is worrying when you see things in the media, but personally I wouldn't just stop taking something that had been fine for me.I would make sure I cut out any lifestyle choices that increased my risk, e.g. smoking, eating unhealthily, not doing regular exercise; to help my situation.
I started feeling really bad cramps in my legs when I was on Diane35 - and was switched to a safer 2nd generation pill (which was no good for PCOS), which helped that.
I have been on Yasmin and Desogen/Marvelon in the past and never had any problems, but after reading about those things, I did wonder. I think there are lots of women on bc pills who really are contraindicted, but some doctors aren't very sensible and/or are under pressure (or bribery) from the drug companies.
According to studies, the increased risk of DVT when on a 3rd or 4th generation pill can be lowered to that of an older, "safer" 2nd gen pill if you avoid one 2 hour car journey (i.e. not being totally immobile) per year... And the risk of clots on the pill is far less than during pregnancy.
I'm not for a moment dismissing the cases of other women, nor anybody's thoughts or concerns, I just know it is very easy to get caught up in the media whirl, as it happens in my country occasionally too! (The UK)
I would continue to take Yasmin (I did for 2 years altogether) unless I felt unwell or started showing any signs of it not being safe. I have switched to Cilest/Ortho-Cyclen recently and I'm getting better results and my doctor is happy to have me on a generally safer (and cheaper) pill!
I thought it was really interesting when I saw the commercial regarding the problems with Yasmin and Yaz. I was on Yasmin for about a year, then my doctor switched me to Yaz because of the "shorter periods" *which I never experienced*. I called my doctor about two weeks ago when I first saw the ad on T.V. and she ended up making an appointment with me for next week and said we can discuss the pro's and con's of staying on the Yaz. Personally, I would rather take another bcp because I don't want to have to worry about the heightened risk.

The only television ads I have seen were about Yaz, which is the generic of Yasmin. I took Yasmin for almost 6 years. I stopped taking it earlier this year because DH and I are TTC. I did try other birth controls, including Yaz. For me, Yaz had different side effects, such as worse cramps, longer periods, and nausea.
I just wanted to point out that generics can be different than the original medicine. I would not stop taking the medication just because of the commercial if it was working fine for me. I would contact my doctor though. I will be interested in hearing more about this though because I planned to go back on birth control to regulate my period after having children. Since Yasmin was the only birth control that worked for me, I will have to try new ones if Yasmin turns out to cause serious side effects.
Yaz = 20mcg Ethinylestradiol + 3mg Drosperinone -- with a 24 pill regimen
The difference in oestrogen should mean Yaz is slightly safer in terms of blood clot risks. However, because the progestin Drosperinone is relatively new in comparison with others, there have been big claims about it being the perfect progestin in these pills, promising weight loss, acne free skin, no PMDD...but these are written my the PR companies. In reality, perhaps there have been less clinical tests on this progestin, or doctors prescribe it because it's newer etc when perhaps it isn't the safest option. These are the least androgenic pills available so in theory good for PCOS.
i saw that commercial too! i was just fixing to start my new mth with yaz and after seein that i got so scared and have been off for almost a mth now. another showing also came up saying that nuva ring has had a number of compliants too. im freaking out.
i saw the comercial the other day and i told myself i dont wanna get off of the pill..cuz this is the ONLY bith control thats actually working for me and giving me y period every month on time. im kinda just going to take the risk. plus my dr monitors me closely on it
