yesterday, my endo rx'ed me levoxyl 0.05 mg for my thyroid. my values were in the upper range of "normal" but since i am having symptoms (super-dry skin and hair; hair loss; fatigue) she said that some people respond to having their numbers lower. anyway, i took my first dose this morning and within an hour had a full-body "flushed" feeling. is this common? has anyone else experienced this? other than that, i feel fine.
another thing i'm a bit concerned about is the reports of hair loss- mine is already thin. does it generally stop once you are on the med for a while???

The hair loss should slow down when your meds are at the correct level. Check out the Hair Loss post under Hypo...it talks about that a bit more.
When I first started taking Synthroid, I had the same flushed feeling at first, including heart palps. It didn't last very long, not even an hour. I got it the first 3 or 4 days I started. It's your body responding to having more thyroid hormone in it. If it lasts too long, then consult your doctor.
Good luck!

I also take Levoxyl. I have been on this particular one for about 3 years. I have been taking meds for this for about 13 years, so I have been on a number of the drugs. I have to say that Levoxyl has been one of the better drugs I have taken. I haven't had to have the level adjusted since I first started on it. One thing to be careful of, that my endo told me, is that different brands uptake in your system differently, and what works at one dose in your body may not work at that same dose if you switch brands. Particularly annoying if you get generic and they switch generics at the pharmacy. My endo wrote my prescription so that they give me the same kind all the time, and that seems to work well.
As for the symptoms, I hav gotten those before, especially if I accidentally take my meds twice in one day. (I should get a pill organizer or something...) For me, the excessive hair loss stopped about a month after I started taking the meds and eventually grew back in. I also had muscle cramps and lethargy too, and that stopped almost immediately.
thank you. i appreciate your sharing your experience. so far, so good. i'm having a little bit of hot flashes @work, but nothing too bad. a little lethargy, but i didn't know it might be the levoxyl. good to know.

well, my hair loss is gradually slowing down but i have yet to see regrowth. (it's been about 5-6 weeks on levoxyl.) for those of you who have had regrowth, how long did the process take?
i'm also having some itching/tingling in my scalp... is this a sign of growth or more impending loss?

Regrowth will take a while. You'll have a bunch of short hairs that will stick up and you can't do anything with! As for the tingling...don't know what that's about, you amy want to consult your doc.

I have been on Levoxyl for 4 years now. I currently take .125mg/day. There are some very important things to know when you take this.
1. Take in the am before eating because food will decrease the absorption of the medication in the pancreas- therefore decreasing the amount in your body. I didn't know this for a long time and that is why my thyroid level were so off.
2. DO NOT take it with an antacid like Tums unless you take it 2 hours before or after taking your meds because it will also decrease the absorption of the medication.
3. It can cause headaches, insomnia, nervousness, tremors, angina, cardiac arrhythmias, palpitations, tachycardia, diarrhea, intolerance to heat & sweating.
also:
* It will help your hairloss. I had very brittle nails and hair- and after being on it for about 3-4 months I already started noticing a difference. It has been 4 years now and I still have somewhat thin hair- it's thicker than it was- but it definately doesn't break as easily!
