Default New member with a question and a rant

Hi! I am brand new to this board but have read a lot of messages and feel like I am right at home. I am AMAZED that there are soooooo many women out there who have experienced the same things I have. I have never met anyone with the same dx as me - thank God there are people out there.

My question is this. I was just diagnosed last Friday with a hypothyroid. It was not a pleasant conversation with the nurse from the office. In fact, it was this, "You have hypothyroidism. You must take Synthroid for the rest of your life. We'll see you in two months to make sure you're okay. Bye." That was it. I was shocked - my husband has hyperthyroid, so I kinda know some of the symptoms because of the research I did for him when he was diagnosed. I had no idea I had hypo until I showed the gyn my charts and my temps were way low (average 95.8 daily). He asked to test (which I had been tested before but always fine) but I thought it was just to get that aspect out of the way. I have been diagnosed with PCOS for a year and a half and *sort of* take my meds on time. I take Prometrium, although from everything I have been reading that is not the most common script for PCOS anymore. I took my meds for about 3 months and my cycles regulated themselves somewhat, enough not to make me worry. When my DH and I started trying, I started charting to see when I would O, and voila! irregular cycles and low BBT's and all the rest.

Not only do I have to deal with the PCOS stuff - the weight, the EXCESSIVE facial hair, the hair on my head falling out (why can't the hair growth be on TOP instead of on the BOTTOM of my head??) and all the rest, now I have to consider everything that goes with hypothyroidism. To be honest, I haven't found much that is of use to me about this condition. I have found a lot of symptoms and the fact that it is a low T4, but I want information on what will happen to me after taking the meds. Will there be side effects? I have takedn it for three days now, just as instructed, and I have been crabbier than all get out. Is that typical? Also, can I take Synthroid with Prometrium? Don't they both try to regulate the cycle? Would they cancel each other out?

I know this is a babble and I apologize about that, but I think if I could get support or answers anywhere, it's here. Thanks for reading and if you can offer me any advice, I would so appreciate!!

Thanks,

Amanda

Amanda {{{HUGS}}} It's a bit overwhelming, isn't it?

Synthroid isn't specifically supposed to regulate you. It might though. I had already been on a regular cycle with ovulation before I was dx with hypo. But if being hypo is the reason why you're annovulatory, then taking synthroid should help. Sometimes all it takes it fixing one hormone and the others follow.

As for taking prometrium - you can still take it while taking synthroid. They do different jobs. And prom. isn't for helping you ovulate, it's just to make sure you don't go too long between bleeds. If you're not ovulating, you're really not regulated. You're probably going to have to see a doctor for that (reproductive endocrinologist would be best if you can).

Part of your hair loss could be from hypo too.

I'm still trying to sort out hypothyroidism, so I really don't have much more to offer. There are other ladies here who will be able to explain things so much better. In the meantime, here are some links with some info.

Good luck. Hope you find the answers you're looking for.

Will there be side effects?

- I have not experienced any... and I don't have my pharmacy info anymore... can you check the paperwork that they gave you with the medicine?

I have takedn it for three days now, just as instructed, and I have been crabbier than all get out. Is that typical?

- Probably not related to the synthroid. But, it can take a while (quite a while) for the synthroid to take it's full effect. I see the number 6-8 weeks occasionally. As for me, I think it took at least 8 weeks (my TSH was 112 when I started), and 3 months to ovulate again.

- Also, can I take Synthroid with Prometrium?

By with, do you mean at the same moment? That's a no. Take your synthroid totally by itself, it's effectiveness is diminished in the presense of other drugs (and foods).

I know you are frustrated right now, the idea of a lifetime of meds is daunting at first. Although, I have to say... it becomes a way of life very quickly, and once you get your meds stabilized, you'll probably feel better. Of all my little ailments, this is the easiest to treat. Hope that you are feeling better soon.
