I've been trying to get some sort of treatment for pcos for nearly a decade now and have always been refused metformin because I'm 'too overweight to get pregnant' and my gp wasn't alllowed to prescribe it for anything other than diabetes.
Well now I can finally get a prescription from my gp as it has been discovered that I'm borderline diabetic so I'm now eligible to take met!!! (woo hoo!!!!) It seems silly that I have to be borderline diabetic to get this treatment but I'm hoping it will help with my pcos.
My question is what can I expect from met? I have no idea what it does how much it helps etc...... If anyone can give me some information I'd be grateful
Thanks
Vikki

No doubt about it, you have star quality. Might just take a while to get there.

I can't tell you what it will do in the longrun, but I've only been on it for 2 weeks. It definitely takes some getting used to. There is a sticky about met side effects. It has a lot of great information on it. Fortunately, I've only gotten really sick (bathroom) once, but I have had a lot of nausea and fatigue as I've adjusted. With insulin resistance, your body kicks out too much insulin and it doesn't properly use the insulin it makes, so you feel hungry more often. Met, if I understand correctly, signals the body to not kick out quite as much insulin.
I'm on Fortamet (a newer version of metformin) and it's wonderful. I've had NO side effects and I'm REALLY noticing a difference in how my body feels as far as regulating my BS levels. You might ask your doctor about it.

Metformin in conjunction with a low GI and low-fat diet and exercise 4 to 5 times per week is excellent for weight loss, I am losing about 2 pounds per week.
Start on a low dosage and gradually work up to help prevent side effects, usually 1 x 500mg per day for a week or two, then 2 x 500mg for a week or two, then 3 x 500mg, then 2 x 850mg. It is also for regulating periods and preventing miscarriage. Good luck.
