Question New to Metformin...

Is it more common to lose weight with it or to gain? I mainly started taking it to help with the pain of the cysts but would love to lose about 17 lbs maybe 20 TIA

Nicole,

I think it is more common to loose weight with Metformin. If you are IR, it means that your body doesn't use energy (the food you eat) properly. Metformin helps with this. But it works best in combination with a healthy low GI and GL diet and daily exercise.

All the best - hope you achieve your goal!

Nicole,

I forgot to mention that for some women Metformin also decreases appetite, making weight loss easier. Before I started met I was hungry almost all of the time - a PCOS symptom I think! - but when I started met, there was a time when I was struggling to even eat three small meals a day - I just didn't feel hungry! But that didn't last long, and now I think my appetite is at a more healthy level - not too much like before met, but not too little like those early days on met.

Hope this helps!
Michelle

I had hoped that I would lose weight with Met, but I didn't. Instead, I have gained about six pounds since I started Met in February! Grrrr...I really had high hopes that Met would help me lose weight, but no such luck. I don't feel that it has increased my appetite at all--I think I have even been eating less--but still, I was able to gain more!

I know that I need to explore the option of a low-carb or insulin resistence diet to help stabilize the weight, but that's hard for me, since so many are based on meat, which I don't eat.
