Unhappy New to Metformin!

Hello All,
I was diagnosed with PCOS about 4 years ago and was just diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome. My doctor just put me on 500 mg of Metformin about 3 weeks ago. I haven't had any side effects and absolutely no changes...has this happened to anyone else?? Should I be trying something else??
Thanks!

I wouldn't worry to much about the lack of change if it has only been 3 weeks. I started out on 500 mg and while I did have side effects...not everyone does. So you are one of the lucky ones! The only change I noticed on 500 mg is less of an appetite and I dropped a few pounds, but I was also dieting and exercising.

I'm sure your doc will eventually increase your dosage and then you will most likely see the changes. I think 1500 mg is the amount that really effects PCOS...but you have to slowly build up to that.

Good luck...and I hope the Met works out for you!

Thanks APSUchick2006...College life is killing my diet too haha...I'm hoping to get back to the doc in a month and hopefully get the Met dosage increased. I'm impatient for results, but I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Thumbs up

Like Eva said, welcome.....to the wonderful world of met.

I actually was pretty much the same as you. No effects really--I'm currently jumping to full dosage at 2000mg from 1000mg, though, so we'll see how this goes.

But at the really low dose you're on, don't be too freaked about not seeing any changes.

Hey,
Sorry I didn't respond...I just graduated and the last month of studying, finals, and graduation about did me in! haha...

Novachick, How was the jump from 1000 mg to 2000 mg of met? I'm currently on 1000. I had no side effects at 500 mg but when i switched to 1000, it was horrible (because of alcohol, last semester of school, stress, bad foods, etc.). Now, I'm living by myself and eating MUCH healthier, not drinking much, etc. and I've had no side effects at 1000.

I'm thinking of going up to 1500 in a week or two. Any thoughts??
Thanks!!
Laura

It was exactly like starting off again for me----very minimal effects. The only real problems/effects I've had with Met is fairly vicious nausea when it's almost time for my dose (as though my last dose is running out!). I spent a few days wondering if I was coming down with the flu, then remembered this is how I felt when I started at 1000mg. I kept little snacks with me, and that seemed to help---otherwise, I had an hour-long commute each day wanting to hurl. Blecch. I'm fine now.

You know what's the best part? I have not gained a pound since I started Met 8 months ago, and I'm down 13 lbs from my highest weight ever. I've never gone so long without gaining any weight (no matter how good I was being---it always was going up!). I need to kick back into the gym, and then I'm sure I'll be seeing the real effects. But even a holding pattern is amazing.
