Default New to Metformin - 7/9/07

Anyone else starting on Metformin this week? I have my RE f/up at 4:15 and as long as my liver tests didn't come back with any problems, I should be starting on Met. I've never had any out of range labwork come back for a Hep panel, so I can't imagine that it will be a problem.

I'm definitely a little nervous about going on it. I pretty much know what to expect after reading a lot about what all the other cysters on Met have gone through. On one hand, I'm excited about FINALLY doing something about getting everything under control after YEARS of having Drs say "oh it's not a big deal." On the other hand, my whole life changes today. Once I start taking the Met, I'm officially acknowledging that I need to take care of myself. If I cheat and eat stuff I shouldn't, it isn't just a weight or a feeling bloated issue. Now I could end up nauseous and feeling terrible. All my favorite foods are all the ones I shouldn't be eating...

Today is a big step, and I just wish that the people around me realized what a big deal it was for me.

IME, I don't think anyone around you will ever realize what you are going through unless they have been through it personally. Not to say your friends and family are not supportive, but they can never understand the changes you go through. My friends and family are awesome, very supportive, but they do not understand it no matter how much I explain it. So many women suffer with PCOS, but it is not a 'mainstream' affliction that they talk about on the news and such so there isn't alot out there on it unless you have it or go looking for the info.

I started 1500/day Met at the end of April and was also scared. I eased into it, taking only 1 pill per day at first then worked up to taking 3/day (one with each meal). When I first got up to 3/day I had some stomach issues so I bumped back down to 1/day for a week then worked up again and had no problems after that. As suggested, I always take it with food but now that I have been on it a few months, I find that as long as I drink plenty of water I can take a dose without food if necessary.

I have changed my diet, I am eating alot healthier now. However, when I do go out to dinner or eat something not-so-great I have not had any adverse reactions. I do my best not to go off track often, but hey - it happens.

I was given met yesterday to start, I am supposed to start with 500 and work up to 1500 within the next few weeks...I had my first 500mg yesterday and so far am ok was thinking about going to 1000 today but am concerned about getting ahead of myself and getting sick...Its just I am so wanting this to work and get pregnant!!! I start clomid next week with the met, my gp was just waiting until my dh's semen analysis to come back before she will prescribe the clomid...

I resisted the met for ages cause I was a bit scarred of it...However, my desperation to get pregnant has over ruled my hypochondria!!
