what is your normal flow like? how long are your cycles regularly? do you usually ovulate? I will sometimes spot, sometimes heavy, for a week or so before the real period starts. It's common in a luteal phase defect after ovulation to spot when the progesterone level is insufficient to completely support the endometrium, and also in pcos where if you don't ovulate, fluctuating levels of estrogen are causing the endometrium to irregularly bleed a bit.
I imagine your dr is right, you should wait until the real cycle starts because clomid probably won't work if you are accidentally starting mid cycle. Are they planning on giving you progesterone again if necessary?
also, many docs will start clomid on day 5 instead of 3. there is no evidence that one is better than another, so you still have time. I've always done day 5-9.
