I need some help.... i am 19 years old was just told i has PCOS a day ago and my doctor gave me birth control because my boyfriend and i are not ttc at the moment, but the doctor said that later on she will switch me to Metformin when we are ttc .... anywho i got home and i was like okay she said that she will switch what i am taking, but that will not be untill 3 years from now when i am done university so i was just wondering how long a person has to take medication for? and does PCOS ever get better or go away?
it's complicated...i was diagnosed 5 years ago and my problems have gotten better and worse in that time. for me personally, weight loss made it better and weight gain screwed it all up again. that doesn't mean that will happen to you too though.
unfortunately there's no cure for pcos, but you can manage your symptoms with diet, exercise, medication, whatever works for you. you might hit the perfect combination and not even feel like you have pcos.
i'm on bcp as well as metformin, so there's no need to accept your doctor's word as law. what i would do is try and find an endocrinologist who is a specialist in pcos, or what i did which is ring local medical clinics and ask if any of the doctor's know a lot about pcos.
I totally agree! I have searched since 2004 to find a doctor who would prescribe me metformin without me ttc and thank goodness I have finally found one that does! The reason for me wanting to start the met was because I REALLY need to drop this weight I have put on! I went from 130 to 240 since being dx with pcos! And as you have probably found out the weight just will not budge!! My friend has been on it for 12 weeks and she has lost 17 pounds so far! So I am very hopeful!
Good Luck!! When I was dx when I was 17 they pretty much didn't know anything about it at my then gynos office and the only thing I was told was take these bcp's and come back when you are ready to concieve! Thank goodness doctors have became more aware since then and now it is VERY manageable and treatable. It will always be there but with lifestyle changes it can be helped alot!!

PCOS effects everyone differently, we all have shared symptoms and problems but in different combinations it seems.
As Renji pointed out there currently is no cure, but I hear that people are working on it
As for whether it gets worse or better, the better you manage your condition the better you will be, however that said, sometimes PCOS just bites hard regardless and you end up having to deal with it.
Finding out at 19 though as opposed to 30 is a bonus - even though the condition itself sucks.
Leoni, I agree with what everyone wrote, I really agree that you should press the metfomin issue (whether it be with your Dr or finding an Endo) because metformin isn't just for ttc, it also helps control PCOS syptoms.
Good Luck! (Oh and WELCOME to SC!)

I'm new myself, but my Dr told me the same thing. Metformin helps with the overall control of PCOS. Hard to say how long one could be on it for, but overall the benefits seem to be good. There are lots of info about Met on here Check it out and maybe discuss with your Dr at your next visit!
Good Luck!

Just wanted to say hello and welcome. I'm pretty new as well, and also not ttc. I'm taking met for symptom management, and i'm not able to take birth control pills. Like many of the women here said, you may want to talk to your dr more in depth, share your concerns, maybe see an endo, i think it depends on what kind of symptoms you are having and how they are affecting you. You can find lots of info and support here. Good luck!
