Red face New & need weight loss help

Hi everyone

I thought i'd introduce myself to the local cysters.

I'm based in Brisbane, Aus, and have just been diagnosed with PCOS 5 days ago.

I'm new to everything - so i'm finding this website great for information

I'm 25 and about to finish my law degree, and have the world at my feet But I have always battled with my weight from my teens. As far as I know i could have had PCOS since then, but i really don't know.

Anyway - i'm reaching out to you girls who've been through it all before. I've tried all sorts of diets, and yet i'm still at my 150kg weight and i'm getting the real sh!ts. I want to lose weight more than anything - i want to get back to being healthy (I was fairly healthy once), and enjoy my body, and give it time to heal properly before I embark of trying to start a family - i don't think i could in my current condition!. Another thing, I am getting married in November this year and do not want to be an obese bride. I will regret it for the rest of my life.

Anyway - I'd love to know what tips you girls have for someone like me. I've read there's some good "glucose revolution" books out there that may help - but are they any good?

What have you found that works for you?

What worked for me was first getting some exercise into my routine and then gradually increasing it 60min+ 5-6 times a day at a med-high intensity. After that, the eating just feel into place. My body just naturally craved nutrient rich foods like fruit, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats. Now I just have to be careful about portion size, and not shop when I'm hungry or moody because them I'm usually drawn to the sweet stuff!
I don't have any foods that are off limits (apart from the totally outrageous stuff - I would never eat a deep fried mars bar) but I make sure that before I put it in my mouth I know how its calories fit into what I need for the rest of the day.
However if you like a bit more structure and direction, you might enjoy books like:
* New Glucose Revolution Guide to Living Well with PCOS
* The PCOS Diet Book: How You Can Use the Nutritional Approach to Deal with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
* Managing PCOS For Dummies
* The Insulin-Resistance Diet--Revised and Updated: How to Turn Off Your Body's Fat-Making Machine

But eating is just one part of the picture. The National Weight Control Registry who have followed people from many different lifestyles with all sorts of medical conditions found that of those people who have lost the weight and kept it off, 78% of them eat breakfast everyday, 75% of them weigh themselves at least once a week, 62% watch less than 10 hours of tv a week, and 90% of them exercise on average at least 1 hour a day. source

The best advice I can give you for 'right now' is talk to your doctor about what you are capable of doing as far as exercise goes (that will depend on your medical/physical history), ask them for about how many calories you should be consuming each day, read the research, and make a plan!

(And don't listen to anyone who says it can't be done or its all because of PCOS. I get that from my doctor and I'm desperately trying to convince them otherwise because there are women out there with PCOS who put the effort in and lose weight just like the women without PCOS do)

The previous person has given you great advise so I don't have much to add to that.
Maybe you may need to be put on metformin, as alot of us are insulin resistant, and if you put on weight easily then the metformin may be of some help.
Don't give up you can do it, but it is not easy to lose weight with PCOS but stick with it for a while and see what happens.

Hi pearshaker

I agree with februarystar, exercise really does help control cravings and it leads to dramatic changes in the way your whole body functions. Whilst I don't believe there is a cure for PCOS per se, I think it's the same as saying there is no cure for obesity. I guess the closest we can come to a cure is lifestyle changes, but... IT IS ENOUGH! The main thing is that your body functions like it's supposed to; everything else is just needless mind-baggage. I encourage you to think positive. There's a reason why PCOS and depression are both only prevalent in post 20th century society (and it has nothing to do with genes!). Everything is about lifestyle choices and taking what your body's got and working with it to produce the results YOU want (not what the drug companies want). Genes are just soldiers, waiting for your command. And you can command them girl. Believe in yourself. You were fit and healthy once before right? It's all a matter of mental orientation. You can do it. The fact you posted here proves you're a proactive, solution-orientated individual who's ready to take her life into her own hands.

Some tips which I would have loved somebody to have given me when I first started my own PCOS battle 8 years ago (when I first discovered this site) are:
*Drink only full-cream milk (skim milk has been linked to female infertility);
*Eat cereals such as oats, bran and porridge (you can even make your own muesli mix: simply mix together 40% untoasted oats, 40% unsweetened bran sticks, 5% sunflower & pumpkin seeds, 7% ground wallnuts [or other nuts you prefer] and the rest whole linseeds, and eat with chopped fresh fruit like prunes, banana or apricot);
*Eat lots of nuts throughout the day - they stave off hunger and stabilise insulin levels;
*Buy smaller plates for dinner and eat your food slower than you feel you need to (conversation is a great way to slow the eating process down);
*Drink water with a high mineral content - this has helped me dramatically with hypothyroid symptoms;
*With food, if it goes in with difficulty, it will come out the same way, so ensure every mouthful goes down as smoothly as possible, i.e. eat a mix of greens, carbs and protein;
***Cut out sugar*** (I could go on for days about this; it is the single reason for ALL my pcos problems - and if I didn't have it around, I wouldn't eat it, simple as that, and I'd probably be perfectly well);
*If you cut out sugar or refined carbs, do so gradually, over a 2 week period, eating a little less each day. Otherwise your body, in its insulin-rich state, will be starved of glucose and down-regulate your thyroid to temporarily induce a lower BMR and conserve energy.
*If you have a sweet tooth, honey is the healthiest thing you could eat due to its healing properties and tendency to not become an addictive substance - it also helps prevent dehydration, a common complaint with insulin imbalances;
*Don't listen to anyone who tells you avocados, nuts, coconuts and other plant foods are fattening - they have good fats in them and the more you eat of these foods, the less you'll crave foods with saturated fats, which are the real 'killers';
*And finally - the most unexpected thing I found in my experience - if you eat in company and talk/laugh for an hour or so after the meal, it aids digestion and stimulates the metabolism!

I wish you all the very best and abundant blessings as you embark on your transformation (remember, you're not alone; we're all going through the same challenges day by day). Just keep on telling yourself you are a winner, because that's what you are.

Never doubt yourself!

Cheers

Though this is not strictly weight loss help I can not reccommend Zan Martin at Healthwise Clinic in Brisbane enough. She is the most amazing natropath I have ever come across. Please please please google her and go and visit. She is also an amazing listener with a real healing presence. They also have acupuncture nutrtionists, chinese herbalists there. She really helped me with with so many of PCOS nast mean side affects.
I wish you the best of luck.

February Star gave you some great advice. For the exercise part, come on over to Soulcyster's companion site, www.fitcysters.com and join in the bootcamp. I know for me, and a lot of other women with PCOS, diet is only half the equation.

What made the most difference for me was diet (quality foods+controlled portion sizes) + exercise (300 minutes a week of cardio+strength training) + quality sleep on a consistent sleep schedule=no more symptoms of PCOS and a healthy, fit body. It took a lot of baby steps to get there but it's totally do-able.

Hope this helps!
