Question New and not sure if I belong or not??

So here is my story in an nut shell, I'll try to make it brief... Back when I was maybe 21 I had some what irregular periods, increased hair growth on my face/chest and acne so my PCP sent me to an endo. who then dx. me with PCOS after some hour long blood work test where they take samples every so often to measure levels I guess. She put me on BCPs and also Met. I think I took them for maybe 2-3 yrs when I saw another endo (different practice) and he did the same blood test he told me I didn't have it, but didn't tell me why I had all the symptoms. So basically I have just learned to put up with the hair all these years (electrolysis, waxing, plucking and scissoring for me). My DH and I have been TTC now for about a year and half with no luck. Everything seems to check out okay from just preliminary blood tests, sa, hsg, post coital but no in depth blood work has been done through an RE or endo recently. It all just kinda makes me wonder how they could tell me I have PCOS and then 3 yrs later say "no you don't have it". Don't get me wrong, I don't want it but I do wish they could tell me why we can't get a BFP, I have all this hair growth and weird cycles. Oh, and I am also thin. 5'5" and 116lbs and have been thin all my life. It seems like because I am thin and look healthy no one wants to try and figure out what is going on. So anyway that is my story and I wish I didn't have to stick to it but I do. I've seen an RE who didn't run any blood work but did do the HSG and post coital and then just recommended IUI but I guess before we spend the money I'd like to know if there is something else going on. Does this seem weird to anyone else or am I just losing it in my own little world??? Thanks for listening and like I said I'm not sure if this is where I should be or not. Feel free to move this post if it is in the wrong place or let me know how to do it and i will. Thanks!

Hi blueyezz, I don't really have any answers for you but just wanted to say welcome and that this is a great site with loads of good information.

I can tell you that from what I've seen on this site, you would not be the first person to get contradictory information. I think an underlying problem is that PCOS and other endocrine disorders are just not that well understood as of yet. I can also attest that there are quite a few thin cysters out there (in here?). If you aren't satisfied with the treatment you are getting with your current RE, or would like to see bloodwork done before moving on to IUI, could you maybe discuss that further with your doctor, or even look at seeing another RE? I felt very good and comfortable with the RE that I finally saw; we did end up doing IUI to get the BFP, but we moved on to that pretty fast because I was already 34 when diagnosed last June. I definitely think having a good relationship with your doctor and feeling like you can get any questions you have answered competently is a big first step.

Good luck and baby dust to you!

Hi Blueyezz,

I'm the exact same size as you and had the same experience years ago. What I've learned is that coming off the BCP affects your hormone levels. After taking BCPs for 2 years I was also told that I don't have PCOS. But a year later my ultrasound started showing cysts again, did you get an ultrasound?? That seems to be the missing piece of info.

Even if they label you as having PCOS it won't change much. We all have such different symptoms and need such different treatments and are confused as hell anyway. I say, trust your RE and try something new.

Amy

Thanks so much for the replies!!! Yes, I have had an US within the last several months and the RE didn't really think I had PCOS from the looks of the US he said, so that is a good thing. I never had an US before that though. Way back when they first told me I had PCOS they never did an US with either of my past endo drs. Who knows??? I actually called my OBGYN today and schedule an appt with her in two weeks to talk to her more about the whole thing and the fact that my periods have been off lately. I don't really bleed anymore I just pass a couple of clots over like 2 days and then just have some brown spotting. Not sure if that is a PCOS sign or not but I need to figure out what is going on and move on with things. I have thought about changing REs. The only problem is that it will just extend the whole process b/c you know how long it takes to get into drs now adays. We will see. Thanks again for caring!

Welcome!

Just wanted to mention that you don't have to have cysts on your ovaries to have PCOS, so an u/s doesn't really matter in diagnosing PCOS.
