Hello everyone! Where to start. Well I was diagnosed with PCOS several months ago now and have been at a complete standstill in regards to treatment. We haven't moved farther than the actual diagnosis stage due to my ob/gyn wanting to wait for my husband. Here let me backtrack a bit. My husband and I have been wanting to have kids which is what actually partly led to this diagnisis, BUT....it turns out my husband has problems too. His main problem is that he is morbidly obese and that in itself has caused HIS infertility problems. My ob/gyn wanted to have him checked out by a Urologist and due to the waitlist for the one in the area, we haven't been able to get him an appt. That is why my ob/gyn has been waiting before doing anything with me. We are at the point now where we have are thinking about forgetting to really try for kids and concentrate on both of our major health issues, my PCOS and his weight (the last we have actually been tryign to get taken care of now for a few years...long story...lets just say health insurance)
Anyway, the reason I have been getting more and more concerned because although my weight has plateaued the side effects have multiplied. I have a severe acne problem on my shoulders, arms, back, and face, skin tags, lack of menstruation, and I have noticed some hair starting to develop on my neck to name a few. In some ways I am not sure if I need to go back to my doctor and tell him we need to get started immediately, until I look in the mirror...that plus I REALLY need to get started on some form of diet but I really don't know where I ought to look. The one dietitian I talked to had never heard of PCOS before and was trying to prescribe for me a diet which would not only not work but probably make things worse.
Any ideas, advice, am I right in thinking that the ball needs to get rolling?
I cant really recommend anything because I am trying to lose weight as well. I am starting the South Beach diet tomorrow. You might want to look into that and since it would be both you and your husband, it might be a great support system for the both of you to be on it. I feel after I eat any carbs like breads, pasta, cereal etc I feel awful. Like I could sleep all day. I think you should possibly get a second opinion with your PCOS diagnosis. In my opinion, it's not fair for you to hold your treatment to wait until your husband is seen. I'd recommend seeing an Endocrinologist. A lot of doctor's dont know much about PCOS. They should at least see if you are Insulin Resistant (which might attribute to you unable to lose weight) and they could even put you on Metformin for that, which has brought luck to many cysters on this board. Good luck to you and welcome to the board.
