Hi everyone! You have no idea how happy I am to have found this website!! I need all the advice I can get. I was diagnosed 6 months ago and have been taking Metformin for about 5 months. I haven't lost any weight and I can't figure out why. I am eating less than what I used to due to the Met. But still I have seen no weight loss. Does it take a while before it starts to work or is there something else I should be taking or doing? Does anyone have any ideas or can you tell me some things that might have worked for you? I am so relieved to know that other teens have this problem.
Hey! GREAT QUESTIONS! I was diagnosed on the first of December, and just recently started using this account.
I'm on Metformin, too, and yeah, I've felt a majority of the food cravings go away...I am on a diet that I receieved from a doctor when my Mom took me to visit a dietitian. She said it was the only way we could find a diet that would help me with PCOS, and I think she's right.
I haven't lost too much weight (because I haven't been very loyal to the diet, but when I am, I loose noticable pounds!).
I would see if you can see a dietitian of your own--I dont' think we can conform very easily to the everyday fad diets, because our bodies handle insulin differently due to PCOS (at least, mine does).
I really hope this helps you, and if not, good luck with your search!
Oh yeah--AND EXERCIZE! Plenty of it. I suppose it really depends how heavy you are--I'm about 220, and my dietitian suggested exercize at LEAST 5 times a week. It's a lot, but I'm really trying!

Young but strong... Thank you so much for the advice that is a really great point! I weigh 196 and I should be down to about 150. I hope that I will talk to you again.
Here are some tips that have helped me, I really hope they can help you too. But no matter what, your should talk to your doctor about a proper diet.
Be active. Use steps instead of the elevator. Try to walk everywhere instead of driving or taking the bus. Jog in the mornings. Do crunches at night. Walk around the room or dance or jog inplace during commercials on tv. Instead of going to the movies, go bowling. You don't have to change your life style drastically, small changes help too.
Drink water. Always have water with you wherever you go, at home or outside. I used to think drinking water that much was silly but ever since I started drinking water, my skin is much better, I'm not as hungry all the time and I feel refreshed. Oh and try not to drink soft drinks and sodas. Theres so much sugar in them, they just make you thirsty and hungry. Plus sugar is bad for us, with the insulin resistance and all. Instead of soft drinks and sodas, drink water, juice or milk.
Eat. Don't ever skip meals. Eat a fruit between breakfast-lunch and lunch-dinner so you wont be starving by the time you eat the meal. Oh and dont eat anything 3-4 hours before your bed time. (My friend stopped eating after 7 o clock and she lost 9 pounds.) Eat lotsa veggies, and salads and soups. Try tuna or chicken on your salad or in your sandwich. Snack on raw veggies and yogurt. Go easy on bread, pasta, rice and sugar. You should really consult a doctor about your diet.
Trick your brain. Use smaller plates so you'll think you're eating a lot, but you're actually eating a normal amount. And when you're hungry like after a meal or between meals, brush your teeth instead of heading to the fridge. Seriously, it works.
