Unhappy New to PCOS...Hairloss :(

Hi girls!

I hoping someone can give me some info about PCOS and hairloss...i have been loosing my hair for about a year...And it is absolutely devistating!

Do all women with PCOS have andogenic alopecia (genetic balding)? Or can the hormonal upset cause by having to much testosterone just cause a temporary shed (telogen effluvium)?

From what I understand, in order to have genetic balding, you must be SENSITIVE to the elevated androgens. If you have not inherited the sensitivity to androgens in your hair follicles, then you will not have female patterned baldness, even if you have high androgens. Is that right?

And if that's true, can just having your hormones be "screwy" be enough to give you a reversible, diffuse shed?

I'm trying to figure all this hairloss stuff out...No one in my family has hairloss, men or women...So I don't think I inherited a sensitivity to androgens...But then why is my hair shedding???

So confusing and depressing....

I'd really appreciate any feedback...

Thanks

It must be truly devestating because we are so based on our hair and how it looks. I feel for you cyster, I started to shed a bit but the doc gave me Spironolactone which seems to be working quite well. Spiro, a diuretic has a anti-androgen effect so perhaps it might help you. I hope this helps and welcome to SC! I hope the other cysters are able to give you more advice on the subject...

I've been wondering about this myself. For about 2 months I've noticed that my hair feels thinner than it used to. Just recently I am shedding quite a bit. I will loose about 20 hairs upon combing it. If I pull on my hair I can pull out 3 to 4 hairs easily. However from what I have read it seems all these hairs are in the telogen stage which makes me think perhaps my shedding im noticing is telogen effluvium. I'm 28 and have always had very very unnaturaly thick hair. Reading about telogen effluvium makes me think it may be causing the problem. I did start avery very strict diet in July and have lost approx 42 lbs since then, also my grandfather passed away, who knows thoough. Those ladies who have experienced pcos related hair loss around what age did it begin if you don't mind me asking?

I am not sure of how much this will help each individual but it has helped me. So I am offering this to you as a bit of help.

I am Black. PCOS has made my hair thin at the top and very dry. As a child I never EVER had thin flimsy hair.

Fastward through all the PCOS issues.

Try a product called Surge. It's a root stimulator. It's not greasy so it should be ok for all hair types.

If you are shedding, try Aphogee Repair Treatment and Aphogree Recontructor. These should be done weekly while sitting under a heat cap. You can buy a heat cap at a local Sally's type of store.

Scalp massages with Rosemary Oil. It is also a root stimulator.

Try protein treatments with a cholestoral conditioner, also found at a Sally's type of store.

These are strategies that helped my breaking and shedding. There's also a web site Hair loss help which sells hair vitamins.

I found that these work. MSM, Biotin, and/or Shen Min.

gitana, a weight loss like that is most always the culprit, (not saying it may not also be something else ) but it is a huge factor... as is stress froma loss . I would start taking some vitamins (antioxidant, b vitamins, etc - not just a multi) and maybe get a general blood panel done to check your levels......I did and i had a really low ferretin and now take iron. (another huge cause of loss)

I am 26 and noticed the loss 6 months ago, my sister has PCOS so I figured out I do too - the missed periods, skin issues, oiliness, weight gain, etc etc. I am on Yasmin and Metformin now and have noticed maybe a little improvement in the pa

Its very hard to tell whether its TE or aga or a bit of both - they have the same pattern. My androgen levels are a BIT high, but who knows if its too high for ME, or im just extra sensitive, or its just the iron etc. I think you just have to treat it like its ALL of these things, and try to fix everything
