I am new to this site as I was just diagnosed with PCOS yestrday based on my hormone levels I guess. I am just so confused. My fiance and I have been together for 4 years and have been actively TTC for about a year with no success. I has a laparoscupy last December and was diagnosed with endometriosis. I decised to not take any meds for treatment and TTC insted, well that has not happened. I picked a new OB/GYN and went in for a ryearly exam and get referred to a specialtisty for an HSG and an untrasound to see if that wasa causeing the problem. So, much to my surprise, I was in shock when my lab work came back indicating that I have PCOS, another block in the way of making our dreams come true.
What I am confused with is this.. How can I have PCOS and still have a period around the same time each month. I ALWAYS have one. I do have a history of ovarian cysts and some other PCOS symptoms.. I am also wondering if I just got PCOS because the RE who did my lap last year said my bloodwork was normal and he did not mention PCOS not one time..
I so need advice. How is it possible to have PCOS with a regular 5 day on average period every month?
hello
my name is kelly
i also was diagnosed with pcos based on lab results.. i have a regular period every month.. yes i am on B/C but the original reason for getting on it was that i had periods that were tooo heavy and i had alot of extreem cramping... i have had a cyst on my ovary when i was like 11yo, but a recent CT scan shows no cysts... i have had issues with weight gain (30 lbs in 3 years) , hair loss, mild facial hair, depression, and other issues... my dr. put me on metformin and every time i took the medicine i had either diarrhea or vomiting or nausea.... since im not actively TTC they said just take the yasmin and dont worry about the metformin until you are TTC..... but more recently i have been extreemly tired, nauseated, headaches (something every day) also if i dont eat about every 4 hours i feel like im going to pass out, and vomit.... im guessing this is the insulin resistance... any who just thought you should know you arent alone, because most of the posts i see it is women without regular periods...
Wow, thank you all for all of this helpful information.. I guess what I will have to do is just wait for my folluw up appointment after my hsg and ultrasound to get the specifics. It just amazes me that so many women with PCOS have different symptoms and cycles, it appears as if it's not a solid list of symptoms that each and every woman has.
Hi kelley, I have not been on BCP in wow, almost 10 years, but I have had a long history of getting ovarian cysts. I got my first one when I was 15. I knew I had them off and on for years after that but I had no health insurance so I did not go. I had one last year that got to 9cm and they were going to take it out..Well I fell really hard and I know it ruptured so I went to the RE to do a scan to see if I had it,it was gone but we found that I had a new cyst on the opposite ovary now.. Thats when I had my lap and was also dx with endo. I dont think I have hair thinning, but recently I have noticed a few dark black hairs that pop up on my chest, I had one pop up on mu neck and one on my back. I didnt think anything of it, just tweezed it! As far as facial hair, I do have light small hair in some areas but you cant see it unless you get way close, I thought it was just normal and that everone had it. Now my weight, that is a whole other issue lol. I have always been "thicker than most" lol. I wore a size 13/15 in 9th grade and I didnt eat bad.. I am a size 18/20 now.. I took phentermine last year to lose weight and i worked my butt off and lost 40 pounds, however..I have gained about 35+ back in a year alone...I don't know how a person can gain that much in such a short period of time but I guess now I know. Sorry this was so long, lol.. I just feel like I'm not alone now and that I have an idea of why my body is doing theses things, and hopefully I can get help now.
Kelly what area of Texas are you in if you dont mind me asking. Do you see a specialtist or do you just see an OB/GYN. Im thinking of maybe going to see a specialtist since I am TTC I think it might be more beneficial to me.?
Thank You!
Hi AmberS! I'm in the same boat as you, though I've been on BCP for 15 years now. Before starting it, I had very heavy periods, very long too and bad cramping. I have reg periods with BCP though. I went to an endocrinologist and he explained to me that to diagnose PCOS you just meet a certain set of criteria. I don't have cysts on my ovaries that have been detected, but have almost every other symptom. My advice to you would be get on metformin because my dr said it will protect your fertility for the future!
well thanks for all the information! Im in the houston area of Texas and sorry i dont know any OBGYN or fertility specialists... i guess since i am not TTC i kind of have left the whole pcos thing alone.... also i had and endo dr. look at my labs and his reasoning was "im tooo young to have problems and you are not TTC so do nothing for now" ... which agrivated me .... i still continue my yasmin (it has estrogen and progesterone) but have concerns about getting on metformin again.... looking at the posts about having cycles and no ovulation concerns me now... i had never thought of that....
