I just received a mailing from my Blue Cross insurance plan. They said that they've recognized that I have a chronic health condition, and I'm eligable for the "Blueprint for Health" plan. Anyone else receive this from Blue Cross? You are connected to a care support nurse, who will keep in touch with you, your progress, and your doctors. I'm not sure if I like this idea, or if it seems like "Big Brother". I've been very happy with my choice of doctors and treatment lately, but I'm not sure I want my insurance company telling my doctors how to do their job... Maybe it's not really like that, though.
Anyway, I was thinking about going ahead and trying it. Then, if I don't like it, I'll stop.
Just wondering if anyone else has heard about this...

I have Blue Cross and haven't received anything about it. I would be leary but then again I have always liked the customer service I have received with them. Like you said, you could try it and stop if you don't like it.

I've been getting stuff from my insurance company like this for a while. When I was pregnant, they sent me something about pregnancy and invited me to join their service for pg women. Now I get stuff from my insurance about diabetes. Since I am on met, they think I am diabetic. I just ignore it, but I suppose it could have helpful hints anyways. I bet that if you are on met, they think you are diabetic and that is the "chronic health condition" to which they are referring.

That sounds exactly like what my insurance sends me. DH's insurance has a 24hr nurse help line & my MIL has him paranoid to use it. She thinks if he calls with symptoms they would note them and may try to use them against him later. Maybe like a preexisting condition or something?
I have Blue Cross and just today I received a specific mailing with my name on it telling me about how to manage my "diabetes" although I am clearly not diabetic according to my doctor or my labs. Sometimes if you are on a medication, like me with Met, you are automatically entered into a database to get mailings and invites. It still pisses me off a little that they think I have something I don't but I don't want to call them up and tell them I don't have Diabetes because they may yank my funding since Met is still off label for PCOS. For now they can mail anything they want to me as long as they cover my medication, if I ever switch insurance companies and they have me down as a Diabetic, then I will contest it I guess.

I DO get mailings for diabetes. It got worse when I was pg because they had to label me as having gestational diabetes (even though I never did) because they wanted to monitor me so drastically, including poking my finger 4 times a day. Drove me crazy because I never did develop it. But I agree, they can send me all they want, it take just a second to walk to the trash.

I got this after my cerclage. Once the insurance company had paid out a lot of money, they decided they wanted to "manage" my high-risk pregnancy. My peri told me not to - he said it makes reimbursement hell for doctors, since the insurance company wants to micro-manage your care. That's what he said, anyway. I just ignored all of the stuff they sent me. They haven't sent me anything about Met or Diabetes, though.

I've gotten stuff like this for my asthma, diabetes (presumably because I'm taking met), and for my pregnancy. I signed up for the asthma one, but changed jobs (and insurance companies) shortly thereafter so I never followed through with it. I ignored the stuff for diabetes, but did take them up on their offer to get me a free blood glucose meter (which I never got, ha!). Then I did sign up for the pregnancy one (for regular, low-risk pregnancies) because they gave me a free book of my choice, but I switched insurance companies again at 25 weeks so I never finished the program. Good thing, too, because it was actually becoming a pain. The nurse would call me every week, make sure I was taking my prenatals, talking about why I'm still taking met, etc. Just too many questions and I felt that I had to defend all my answers, eventhough my OB approved what I was doing. The program might be okay for women who aren't good about making their prenatal appointments or are generally uneducated, but not for me.
My feelings about all these programs is that they are probably good for a certain segment of the population, but if you're good about researching your condition and keeping with doctor's appointments and the like, then I think they are too nosey and micromanaging for my liking.

I think it all boils down to money - the insurance company wants to pay as little out as possible, so they figure a nurse might talk you out of something. As though somebody who'd never met you would know more than your doc. These things just p!ss me off.
It certainly does all boil down to money. In my case, I don't think it was to necessarily talk me out of anything, but to make sure I was treating myself before problems got worse. For example, it was cheaper to have a nurse call me once a month to make sure I was taking my asthma meds than it would have been for me to land in the ER because I hadn't. Same for the diabetes one, it's cheaper to make sure someone is taking their met and their blood sugar is good than to have that person end up with major complications for not following the advice of their doctor. So it really is all about money and the insurance company is hoping that if they catch things sooner they'll save money in the long run. That may be true, but I have my doubts about whether being part of these programs really does anything for treating conditions before they get out of hand. Like I said, for people who are good about taking their health seriously and doing what they should be doing, the nurses are no more than a nuisance. But there are some people I know that need that "nagging" before they consider doing anything.

This doesn't have to do with blue cross, but when me and my fiance bought our house we applied for life insurance. He came through the application with flying colors, but they pretty much wanted a full psychiatric evaluation of me, and wondered when my last 'psychotic episode' was...all cuz i take Paxil for depression. I wrote them saying there never was any pyschotic episode and i am on paxil cuz i cry easily and it helped me deal with things better. Long story short they never did approve me, guess they thought i might cry somebody to death or something!
If it was me recieving the mailings from blue cross i would contact them to be sure that they know what they are talking about, if you decide to change insurance companies later and never bothered to tell the old one that you didn't have diabetes..i can see them holding that against you..saying "Well you never contested it before now..so why should we believe you?". You know..cover your own *ss!

I KNOW that in my case, their "management" program was all about saving money. If they were so concerned about "managing" my pregnancy, why didn't I hear from them BEFORE I was halfway through my pregnancy and had just had a $15,000 surgery?
That said, I LOVE BCBS. I wouldn't have insurance with anyone except them or Aetna. I have excellent options with both companies.
