New! Reassure me metformin gets better. Please! lol.
Hi all!
I'm Britt.. I'm 22 and was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 17 after having a period for 5 months straight.
My Gyn immediately put me on birth control pills and told me 'You need to stay on these or else your cysts will destroy your ovaries then your chances of having a kid are pretty much gone.'.. I remember walking out of that office in tears and I called my mom crying saying 'She said I have PCOS and I'll never have kids, she told me I'd never have kids!' and my mom very calmly said 'Brittany, I had both you and your sister and I have PCOS too. You'll be fine'.
So, I stayed on birth control (Femcon) for 4.5 years. In January of last year my husband (boyfriend at the time) moved in with me and I stayed on the pill til he left for bootcamp in May and I came off. I went back on it July afterwards and stayed on it til I got married in September.
So, we tried September-February with no luck. I had a normal period September and October.. No period November or December. And in january I started a low carb diet, and I had a normal period January, February and March. April 1st I went back to the Gyn for my yearly and I asked to be put on metformin after reading these forums.. My Dr was kind of hesitant. She was pretty thrilled with the 30lbs I had lost since January and told me I should rely on that to begin with, but I told her I wanted the Met. So she sent me for labwork, I got it done, turned it in, and I started Met on Monday April 13th. She has me on 1500mg. Me, being determined decided to start on this dosage and work my way up instead of doing what most people do. It hasn't been fun, that's for sure. I have diarrhea and upset stomach all the time. And nausea in the morning and right before bed. Today I picked up some pepto bismol chewables and I feel a bit better.. But it does get better right? Can Met mess up your cycles? Jan, Feb and March I started between the 10-14th of those months and so far I haven't seen AF this month. Sometimes I feel twinges and cramps like I should start, but nothing so far.
So, anyways.. My husband is deployed right now and he's due to be home by August. I'm moving up to Virginia Beach in July though, so if anyone knows of any good Gyn's/OB's/RE's let me know! But we've decided when he gets back it's time to start TTC a Navy Brat!! I'm beyond excited, I'm just worried it's not going to happen.
Anyways, sorry for such the long post! But I just wanted to say Hi!
Hi Britt! I started met on april 3 and i had the same s/e. upset stomach and gas(sorry tmi lol) but the worst so far is HEARTBURN!!! I am miserable. I quit smoking March 1. Before i quit i had hearburn all the time. after i quit i didnt have it until i started taking met. i called my gyn and she said it was normal and it would subside if i could just stick with it. Good luck!

3/13/09- Dx w/ PCOS & IR
4/1/09- Provera 10mg for 5 days
4/3/09- Met 1000mg/day, Phentermine 37.5 mg/day
4/5/09- Stopped Phentermine, BP went thru the roof!
Hey Britt... Yes things will eventually get better after a few weeks on the pills yet if you miss a pill or have to change doseage the s/e unfortunately will come back.. I have been on Met for about 5 months now and my doseage has been changed twice and both times I had to readjust to the s/e... Also in my persoanl opinion try and stay away from anything really fatty, spicy or tomatoy those always are a killer with these pills.. The pepto was a real life saver when I was going through those first couple weeks but after that you should be fine...
Ans you asked about Met messing up your period me personally I had to go to a higher doseage and finally got AF but after that haven't had one since so again its just how your body reacts.. Since mines the way it is I had to get a 10 day 2 pill a day dose of progestrone to start my period than I start clomid soon after.. So PCOS is a very diverse and on a person to person basis but things definately do get better...
welcome to sc. i find with the met that if i avoid greasy/fatty/sugar foods as much as poss and always eat with the met i am ok with it. could you keep a food diary ?? so you can see which foods make it worse. hope you feel easier soon.
Thanks ladies!
I really appreciate the support. I actually backed myself down to 1000mg lastnight and had a pretty decent night. Then this morning I ate my lunch with 500mg and no side effects so far, not even the funky twinges in my stomach that usually happen. lol I might try to see how I do at 1000mg for a few days then go back to 1500mg.
