I am a little bit confused on how this all works, so bare with me, and I hope you all can help me if I need it.

Here is my story.........

My name is Catrisha. I am 21yrs. old. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism in September of 2001. I since have been doing daily regiments of some type of thyroid medicine. I started out on 50mcgs of Unithroid, which seemed to work for about a year. Then I had my TSH levels drawn again, b/c I just did not feel right. They had more than doubled from what they were when I was diagnosed. My GYN then switched me over to Synthroid 50mcgs. Needless to say it worked. (Mind-boggling) Any way, I went about taking it and getting checked every 3 months or so. Everything went fine until around March2004. My TSH levels were up again. I was then increased to 75mcgs of Synthroid. Of course this worked until January2005. I was then increased again to this time 100mcgs daily of Synthroid. So, far I am doing fine.

Now, to my PCOS part. Back in Feb2005 I started researching my symptoms. Again and again it came back as I possibly could have PCOS and/or Hypothyroidism...which I already knew I had. So, I ask my GYN to test me for it. He of course doesn't b/c I was taking Clomid at the time in hopes of TTC #1. I did a round of 50mgs, and that failed to make me ovulate. I then did another round this time at 100mgs. Still no ovulation. This apparently triggered a response from my Dr. He could not understand why the Clomid was having no effect. So, I did the routine insulin glucose testing along with FBS testing.......and low and behold just yesterday I finally got my results and now am diagnosed with having Hypothyroidism and PCOS.

I am due to start taking Metformin on May12th. The reason for the wait is that my GYN broke his leg thus I got to see an RE by mistake that finally by my request referred me to see him in his office. (My regular GYN wouldn't refer me out, even though I have begged and pleaded with him.) Plus, I was referred by this RE to a dietician to help me improve my eating habits to optimize my chance of conception along with helping know how to eat better so that the Metformin will work better. So, in a nutshell, that is my story. Sorry it is long and winded, but that is me long and winded.

Hi Catrisha,
How is the met going? I take 1500 mg/day. I had nausea and diarrhea until I started taking the met right in the middle of my meal. Since then no problems.
I have had some PCOS symptoms since puberty, but was able to conceive my first 2 kids without difficulty (in fact my second son was a surprise blessing! ) After his birth my PCOS his full force (irregular heavy periods, outrageous weight gain, depression, etc.) but I was not diagnosed until 3 years later! Since my hubby and I had always wanted a "medium-sized" family, we started ttc #3 when our boys were 2 and 3.
We just couldn't understand why it was so hard this time! And I must admit I put off going to the doctor for a long time (I have a serious doctor phobia )
Anyway, after seeing a couple docs who said I was just too fat, I found my current doc, who diagnosed my PCOS (as well as my depression and diabetes). I started met in January 2003 and we were blessed to conceive our daughter in November 2003! I currently take met, prozac and lo/ovral bcp.
Hope this helps, email/pm me if you want to talk!
Jenny

Hello and welcome. I was lucky enough to be diagnosed with PCOS & Thyroid disease within a month or two of each other so started on medication for both around the same time. This helped a lot because unless both are treated, you really can't call yourself healthy enough to TTC (something always goes wrong it seems).

I had to really fight to stick with the glucophage/met at first because I had a lot of side effects. But after 3 months or so they settled down and the gluc really worked for me. I am hoping that you see success from it too.
