Hi, all. I wanted to start writing posts on this site. I've been perusing it for the last few months and it's so helpful. I want to become more active with it. So, here's an intro: I am thirty-two years old, married and have a dear sweet dog. Not interested in conceiving, at least for now...most likely never. I was told at age 16 that I would probably have trouble with fertility, but was never given a PCOS diagnosis until older. ACtually, most doctors have given me tests and said it looks like I have PCOS, but seem reluctant to actually officially diagnose it. I have had very irregular periods since I first started getting them-very painful cramps and irregular cycles. I have hair loss and hirsutism and am overweight. Wsa recently told I have high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I am currently on the pill and have been for years. I went to a naturopath for the first time and am planning, per her advice, to go off the pill and try taking herbs. This will start in three weeks, when my bcp pack runs out. I am scared to go off, scared my symptoms will flare up severely.
I am VERY interested in weight loss, but nervous about it. I have been a chronic dieter my whole life and this has led me only to bingeing and gaining more weight. I bought the book on the IR diet, but just the word diet makes me scared.
So, hello to you all and I look forward to hearing back from you.

I become absolutely pre-occupied by food just at the mention of the word "diet", so I know what you mean. I have been living a healthy life-style for a couple of years now ie,excercising most days, not drinking too much alcohol, taking vitamins. But its the food that continually lets me down. I know what I should and should not be eating, but there seems to be a part of me that just wants to sabotage all my efforts by eating too much/the wrong foods. . I saw a naturapath last year and I was started on a great diet, very healthy, full of foods I enjoy. Only problem was , I only stuck at it a few weeks. But I feel I gained some knowledge from it.Slowly but surely with all my efforts I am seeing some results. Ive lost 15lb over 2 years (very slowly!!) and my body is toned with all the excercise. I have been a chronic dieter myself so IMO if you just keep plugging away with excercise and healthy eating the results will speak for themselves.

Welcome to SC from another 32 year old cyster ! I hope you find a doc who is knowledgeable about PCOS and can help you. Here are a couple of links you might be interested in:
BTW: I understand you said you are not TTC, but that you were told you might have fertility issues. I've known plenty of PCOS ladies who were afriad to get their hopes up about conceiving, only to later have children. I've known at least two men who had "fertility issues" who had children without meds or intervention. I dont' believe anyone should be talked into TTC. but I've been were you are, thinking it wasn't possible and no one told me (except one doc who didn't seem to know much about PCOS) otherwise. I wish I had had a doc when I was a kid who would have diagnosed me early and explained to me what my symptoms meant.
Around this site you will see a lot of women who don't diet, but have a Way of Eating (WOE). It's important to have a healthy WOE that you can actually stick to. I've had the same WOE for 3 years and I'm 55 pounds lighter. I LOVE food, so taking certain foods out of my diet and not limiting how much I eat of the rest has been the easiest for me. It allows me to not feel deprived, but also to slowly loose weight.
I'm also insulin resistant, so I'm on Metformin, which has helped with my weight loss in the past few months.
Thanks so much for all the warm welcomes! I have some questions about people's replies: 1) Does your WOE have anything to do wtih how many carbs you consume? I did buy the IR Diet book (just wish it didn't have the word "diet" in it-maybe I could replace it in my head with "IR WOE" book!) I do feel if I ate more protein it could reduce my carb cravings.
Also, for those of you on met, how do you feel it affected your weight loss and do you feel youv'e had a lot of negative side effects from it? Thanks!

No, I restrict certain foods, but never count my carbs.
I had a sick stomach with Met for a short while. I now have very little appetite with it. I have lost 10 or 15 pounds since starting it a few months ago.
Dieting is hard but it is so helpful in helping to get PCOS symptoms under control.
