...not newly diagnosed however. I am finally ready to get my health back on track after about 5 years of pretending nothing was wrong. I was diagnosed at 18 in 2000 and stopped all meds including asthma meds in 2003. Didn't want to be on all that medicine. It was about 5 pills a day, 3 inhalers and a nebulizer. Stopped it all. Don't know why. I also was done swimming competitively which of course led to my astronomical weight gain. So, anyway, here I am. At my mothers request who has been perusing this site periodically for several years, just to keep up to date on things.
My plan for this new year is just like most other people. I plan on losing weight. My mother, my partner and I are all going on our own "biggest loser" adventure. We signed up at the local pool to swim again. We will see how that goes when we start on Monday. It has been 5 years since I really trained and it could be somewhat of a difficult endeavor. But, I am ready for it. I want to eventually get into the Masters swim program and compete again.
We have already planned that once we have lost weight (it is a different goal for each of us), we are going to go to an amusement part to ride the roller coasters. I absolutely love the thrill of a coaster, but since I have gained weight, I do not fit comfortably in the cars anymore. So, I have something to look forward to.
The one thing that I struggle with is whether I should go low-carb, or low calorie for my diet. I know that the goal is ultimately to lower the calorie intake, but should I focus on truly low-carb, or go all around low? What would you suggest for someone who is not a huge fan of meat if low-carb is the way to go?
Thanks for reading! I hope to get to know some people here!

Ali: WELCOME to Soulcysters!!! You will LOVE it here....I am truly obsessed with this website.... I have been doing Weight Watchers. I cannot stand doing low carbs because I feel like I am being deprived. Just my opinion....some people do great on low carb, but I love weight watchers. You can see by my siggy that it is working great for me!
I've found low carb to be easier than low cal. But yeah, as Sassy mentioned, there are things I want that I know I can't have (Hello potatoes!), but I haven't been fixated on food and eating like I was when I low-carbed in the past.
