I've been on BCP since I was diagnosed, but wasn't really given much information about PCOS. I've gained 40 pounds since I was first diagnosed, but never realized that it could be due to PCOS. I'm now trying to lose most/all of the weight I've gained.
I was started on Metformin a year ago, but stopped taking it because of laziness and the GI upset. My doctor never explained to me how important it was to take the Metformin consistently, so I didn't think twice about stopping it. My endocrinologist was also very negative, calling me fat and making me feel bad about myself, so I avoided going back to him for follow up. Its only recently that I started doing research and realized how high my risk for diabetes is and how PCOS can make weight loss more difficult.
I just stopped taking Yasmin because it gave me horrible PMS and mood swings, and was just started on Ortho Tri-Cyclen low. I've been moody and fatigued the past couple days I've taken OTC lo, but don't know if that's from the pill or just frustration/depression.
I guess I just need some encouragement/advice and maybe some weight loss tips. I've lost six pounds, but seem to be at a plateau, and I'm not sure what diet I should really use... |

It's hard. Even with metformin, many of us find it very difficult to lose. Some of it is trial and error as to what works for you and what you can live with in the long run.
You might want to narrow it down & then ask specific questions. The search function isn't working right here, but you can also do a soulcysters search through google.
It's a process & a journey but it's good that you are educating yourself. You'll get there eventually.

My advice to you...GET A NEW DOCTOR!! Remember: Your doctors work FOR YOU! Believe me...I am a RN...your doctor does not own you.
You need a physician that will listen to your concerns and symptoms and that will educate you properly.
Hang in there!! And shop around to find a better physician!! You deserve the best out there!!!

About weight loss, I have taken off about 26 lbs in 8 months by changing what I eat. I try to limit by flour/bread intake. I also have made my biggest meal of the day around 2-3 in the afternoon. That has really seemed to help me with losing some weight. I still have about 30 lbs to go. |

I actually had an appointment with the same endocrinologist yesterday, and it went much better than before. Maybe it was because I had a better understanding of PCOS, and understood that I have alot of weight to lose, or maybe he just got more sensitive. He re-started me on Metformin, and did blood work. I'm feeling much better about everything today, partially thanks to the good visit, and partially thanks to the great replies here.
SandV, hearing about others who have done well with weight loss is so encouraging. Thank you for sharing!! |

Points: 168.50 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 168.50 | I went to 4 different doctors for over 4 years - had bloodwork done numerous times - was always told that I was fine - that I just needed to eat less and exercise more. It was very frustrating knowing that I was doing everything right and still gaining weight! Just got diagnosed by a GREAT obgyn on May 1, 2008 after thinking I was insane for the past few years. I started Metformin 2 weeks ago and feel better already. I think diet and exercise are still very important to shed weight. But definitely SWITCH doctors! It took me awhile to get it right, so don't feel bad. Like the others said, the doctors are supposed to help you - not put you down!! Good luck! |
