New to this site & to met... any advice??

I was diagnosed with pcos last week. I came across this site reading up on pcos. I started taking metformin yesterday and need some advice. My primary dr did not prescribe it for me, though he suggested i see a fertility specialist since i want to become pregnant. I'm in between jobs, so my current insurance does not cover infertility.... my mom had metformin pills that she has stopped taking, so i am going to take those for myself. i realize self-medicating isnt smart for me to do.. but i wouldnt otherwise have the means to get a prescription... in reading a lot of these blogs.. i am hopeful that i will conceive soon. while i do have pcos.. i do get regular cycles throughout the year... is that normal for some of you? also, what does bfp mean? af? dd? there are a lot of acronyms used on this site that i don't know.. any help or advice you can provide at all is greatly appreciated.

there is actually a noobie thread on here. Its got all the abbre. for al that. dd=dear daughter, af means aunt flow=period, bfp=big fat positive,bfn=big fat negative etc. here is the link to all the others.

Im not sure u should just take ur moms metformin mainly cause ur not sure what mg u should take etc.I dont see an infertility doc. I see a reg obgyn. She perscribed me metformin and provera wich induces my period. So if u can see ur obgyn and if they perscribe u metformin u can get it at walmart on the cheap list meds and at krogers. I got 90 metformin for 6.00 at walmart! so thats really good and cheap. I dont have insurance at all right now but I found a doc that works it all out with me. I only pay 29.00 a month till i get my bill caught up

thanks for the advice.... i'll have to make an appt to see my obgyn... it just seems like everyone here is taking 1000 mg or more per day... so, i didnt see the harm if i took 1000 mg. good luck to you as well!

I just started taking Metformin (500MG) May of this year. The first month I felt amazing but let me add I am taking it in combination with Levothryoxin (112MCG) for my thyroid. Now i feel myself again. Kinda tired but may be im super busy right now.

Anyway I finally started my cycle for the first time in over a year and a half. The only complaint I have is my breast feel VERY sore and firm. And my cramps were pretty bad. I was wondering if anyone else has had that problem? Is it probably the Met?

It sounds like it could be the met. After going so long without ur period could be it also! The met hasnt doen that to me but ive only been on it for a month now! Take care and good luck
