I am SOOOO glad that I found this site - it really is a god send I was diagnosed with PCOS the last Monday after being passed from Pilar to Post by various Doctors and Gynaes who told me to `go away and try and lose some weight and you`ll be fine !!`
I have also been prescribed Metaformin - 500mg a day for the first two weeks and then 1000mg a day after that.
I have put on 9 stone 12 lbs ( yes you read that right !!!!!!) in the last few years and had no idea why .... so glad that finally I know whats going on !
I would love to hear from anyone and everyone to share experiences, ups and downs etc I would also love to hear from people who have had success with Metaformin...
Also a friend mentioned Atkins and gave me an Atkins book. I have been told that I am Insulin Resistant and by looking at what Doctor Atkins says about Carbs and Insulin surely this is a good thing ??!!! Is there anyone else out there that is taking Metaformin, Low Carbing and losing weight ?? Please let me know - I need to have faith in this - I am at my wits end !!!!
Hello and welcome!
I'm so glad you find us. I'm not taking the met because my gyno is not prescribing it for me. I'm sure the other ones here will be more helpful then me
Good luckand see you around!
Hi Tracey!
Welcome to Soulcysters and our little UK cysterhood! I can't offer advice on Met as I'm not on it, but I know others are and have had really positive results, no doubt you will hear from them.
Have you had a look in the diet and exercise forum? You'll probably find lots of answers there.
Enjoy the boards!

Hi and welcome to the board!
Good luck to you, make sure you asl lots of ? since everyone is really friendly and there is always someone there to answer your question
I thought this website was fantastic when I first started to read up on Pcos - doesnt it explain alot?!?!
I thought for years I was just strange and as you said just told to go and lose some weight and it would all be back to normal.
Last Friday after a blood test my doctor said he thinks i have PCOS. I havent been put on any medication as yet and am still waiting to see the gynacologst at the hospital but reading other peoples stories and different symptoms it sure would explain a think or two.
Anyway as I am V. new to PCOS and this site I thought I would say ello and if you ever want to chat to someone who might be able to understand the ups and the downs
Just send me an email.

Meds: MET for nearly 2 years now 3g daily! 33lbs lost to date since Dec 2003!
I've found metformin really helpful. when I first started on it I lost 8lbs in 6 weeks. Before I started it I was really ill, hardly eating at all, throwing up constantly and still putting on weight! On the met. I found that I had to eat before taking the tablets or I'd get a 'dodgy tummy'! I went from eating one timy meal a day, to eating about 5 or 6, and that's when I lost the 8lbs! I also got my first period in 6 years that hadn't been 'induced' by provera, the pill or norethisterone, and started getting my period every 5-6 weeks.
I had to come off met. because I have a neurological problem that needed some attention, but I started back on it yesterday, and I'm hoping I can stay on it now.
