Hi, I'm new here. I have PCOS, and nobody seems to understand what I'm going thru. I heard about this site and decided to give it a try. I am 28 yrs old and my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for 4 yrs with no success. He's in denial that anything is wrong with me and brushes it off with "it's just not time yet" I am so depressed because everybody around me is having babies and I can't. I recently lost my job due to a layoff and my partime job has very minimal insurance to offer. I will graduate college in 1 yr and hope to have good enough insurance at that time to go to a specialist for help, but until I can afford that, can anyone give me some tips on how I can better control the symptoms of PCOS. My mood swings and depression are unbearable. I gain weight so easily. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Stephanie
DO you have insurance through your husband? What kind of insurance do you have right now to help you get by? It's not a good thing to let your PCOS go untreated. Trust me...been there, done that.
With some good docs, they will work with you as in your payments. And they can give you samples of meds to get you by. You should try looking into that.
Welcome to SC and good luck!!

Stephanie-Welcome! When my husband and I first met I had very minimal insurance. I never had my periods regularly but I was told that is a great first step. I was able to get sample of birth control pills from my doctor so I only ended up paying for half of a year of pills. I decided to use the pills because it was effective in regulating my periods and helping the symptoms of PCOS. Of course, this is not a great way of getting pregnant. If you want to go right to that I would recommend talking to a doctor about payment plans or seeing if your husband's insurance would cover it if you were on his policy. And, always ask the doctor if there are samples you could have. They get them all the time so it never hurts to ask. Good luck!

If you can't afford to go to the doctor and get on metformin or something, I would strongly suggest getting on one of the low carb diets. I used Atkins, but lots of people here use all different ones. Go to the weight loss section and check them out to find out what you like. I found that being on the diet helped control my insulin resistance and diabetes better than any drug I had used. My liver enzmes came down to normal levels. I didn't lose as much hair. I had less hair in undesirable areas. I got my period (which I don't usually have without medication). My cholesterol was within normal perameters. I had more energy. I also believe it is the reason I have Jamie now. I have 2 friends that were able to conceive by following a low carb diet without fertility treatments. I did use fertility drugs so I don't know if I could have without them for sure.
I noticed in your post you stated that you'll be graduating college in a year. Most colleges have some type of health center, at the very least. Your larger colleges and universities with medical schools will definitely offer student medical facilities. You might look into this, as there might be little or no cost involved.
