Default New and thin...

Well, I'm probably not "thin", I'm 5ft2 and 115 pounds, think that makes me "average". I've just been diagnosed with PCOS, (well they think that's what it is, I have the cysts and the irregular cycles, but my bloodwork isn't back yet).

Anyway, I have a question: As we are thin, we probably don't want to loose any weight, and I understand that weight loss is one of the ways to help with PCOS....so, what do we do??

Is there a special diet for the thins?? Do we exercise?? What do you girls suggest??

Me and my husband are trying to concieve...which maybe tricky...but they might put me on clomid, they've said....

But I'm wondering if there is anything I can do re: my lifestyle to help the situation?

Thank you for any help!

Welcome, Hoolah.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry one bit about labeling yourself a "thin cyster." I am 5'4" and 125 lbs. and in my opinion, anyone who doesn't fit the picture of the classically overweight cyster can be considered a thin cyster. It's part of why the diagnosis is missed more often for us!

Weight loss can be a help for cysters who are overweight because fat affects how hormones work in the body, so weight loss is not likely to benefit us because excess body fat is not contributing to our version of the syndrome. Just before I started to actively TTC my DS, I had tried the Zone Diet to see if I could make my periods come through monitoring my diet. It didn't help me much, though it did decrease some of my food cravings at the time. My recommendation is just try to have the healthiest diet possible...whole grains, fruits & veggies, etc. with a minimum of processed/refined sugars, etc.

Exercise is often highly recommended for all women, so by all means, indulge if you can. I have always intended to join Curves for Women, but I got tendonitis after my DS was born and now have polyarthritis (possibly lupus or rheumatoid arthritis) so I haven't felt as though I could handle it. And then there's the issue of I am TTC again, so it wouldn't make sense to sign up and have to stop as soon as I achieve PG again.

Anyhay, sorry for the ramble--please feel free to join other thin cysters TTC on the thread that is titled such. Godspeed!

Welcome! My specialist (who I think actually has a brain, unlike my GP) said there is not much to do for thin cysters. But I think a low-carb diet and some regular exercise at least can't hurt the situation, I always feel better when I do it. Plus ask your doctor about other options like met/avandia and some of the other treatments you see posters writing about on the site. Met at least brought back my cycles after nine months of no periods and that's an improvement. Good luck TTC!

I, too, was just diagnosed and am not by any means over weight. So losing weight is not a concern of mine or my RE. However, he did recommend (actually he prescribed) that I start eating different things. He suggested sticking to foods with a lox glycemic index (lots of fruits and veggies, and whole grains). He said to cut out the fatty foods, refined sugars, and potatoes. As for excercise he said not to over do it. 20 min. on an eliptical would be fine but nothing too strenuous.

Default Diet and Exercise

My Dr has suggested I beging a low-carb or low-glycemic index diet... no calorie counting as this is not a weight loss diet for me; just what the other posts said about avoiding refined sugars and carb loaded food. She also said to make sure I exercise regularily to burn off any extra carbs. If this doesnt make the difference we are looking for, she will likely put me on metformin.

My mild body acne is better with limiting carbs and my husband has lost a few pounds that he's wanted to for a long time (he eats what I cook for myself). Waiting a couple months to see if this brings my cycles down to a normal range.

The news now also suggests limiting milk (not yogurt or kiefer). It apparently has a high-GI response. something to research.

Red face hi

Hi new to this too, I weigh 126 and am 5'6 so I am average as well, I look thinner because I have alot of muscle, cuz I workout alot. About the diet thing,I have been told to low carb it and avoid all sugar that is not very natural, like the sugar thats in fruits. The sugar really makes symptoms of pcos worse ive read for everyone with this syndrome. Like I really brake out if I eat any sugar. You will lose weight this way though. When I start losing to much, I add more fruit to my diet. hope this helps a little good luck.

It's definitely worth trying a low GI diet, or an other healthy diet your dr recommends... but don't beat yourself up if it doesn't regulate your cycles like it often does for fluffier cysters. I tried diet and other stuff like cinnamon and various supplements but nothing worked for me until I went on clomid.
