Default New, Thin & Confused

Hello...new to this site & PCOS....recently diagnosed early March. I'm 28, 5'3" and 117. I was on the pill for 12 years and got off last May...haven't seen AF since August. My testosterone level is normal and I don't have any symptoms except no AF. I was diagnosed with Hypoglycemia around 16. My primary care physician put me on Metmorfin 1000mg/day. I have a few questions:

1. Should I get a second opinion?
2. How long does Metmorfin take to work?
3. Should I be on a low carb diet?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

First off, a low carb (or at least low sugar) diet is a VERY good idea for anyone with PCOS. I have been eating hardly any sugar since december, and my periods are beginning to regulate. If you're not willing to start the metformin yet, you may want to consult a Endocrinologist, who will help you out with explinations of exactly what the problem is, and will know whether or now you even need medication to control it. Everyone is different, even the people with this same syndrome. I didn't need met to regulate my periods because i didn't have any other symptoms, so it didn't seem as important to go on a medicine i turned out to not even really need.

This is just my opinion, but i hope it helps!

Dear schwic,

Just read your post. Don't know if I will be much help, but thought I would try. I definitely say get a second opinion or really push the issue with your current doctor. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2000, but it took me years to get the diagnosis!!! Mainly because I had so few "symptoms". My only "real" symptoms are hirsuitism and infertility. My OB/GYN that was I was going to at the time just kept telling me that since I had one child, there obviously wasn't a problem. It didn't matter that it had taken us a while to conceive him. She just kept looking at the fact that my AF was normal, I was thin, etc. I finally left her and went to another OB/GYN. My very first visit with him he told me that he thought I had PCOS. He did blood work, which, believe it or not, came back normal! After much testing he finally did an internal sonogram and my ovaries were covered with the cysts! And I finally had my official dianosis. So....you never know. Really pursue it! As for the met question...I don't know. I was never put on any type of medication for anything. I just did 6 rounds of fertility meds. Nothing else. As for the low carb approach....again, I don't know. I have seen that many others have done it and have had great results. But, I have not gone that route. I guess I like my carbs too much! I have a little weight to lose currently due to taking steroids a few years ago for an eye disease (the pounds really packed on extremely quickly!) and then taking the clomid. I have really struggled to get the weight off. Which is really weird for me since I have never had a weight issue before. I generally weigh about 125, but gained 40 pounds through it all. I have lost down to 150 and am really trying to get back to my weight of 125. Hopefully this year I can!

Anyhow...I know that last part was just me blabbing, but I hope the other helped you may a little. Good luck!
