Default New w/ PCOS & Insulin Resistance

I was diagnosed with PCOS and Insulin-resistance just a short 4 months ago. Before that, my husband and I had been trying to conceive for over 2 years. The reason I was diagnosed was because my mom read an article in the local paper about PCOS and when I took it to my doctor after being on Chlomid for 1 year she said non-chalantly "Oh yeah, that's you". It made me wonder if she would have ever made that diagnosis if I hadn't shown her the article?

Anyway, I've been told that I have PCOS and I'm insulin-resistant. I am on Metformin and it has changed my life, though after reading several posts I wonder if there is more information out there that I just don't know about because I don't know that I have any major symptoms or problems.

I don't have cysts and I only have minor symptoms, which I've had for about 16 years. I've never had a regular period, but when I started depo provera shots I didn't get my period at all and then went I went off of it I got it every week. I had to go back on it and then when I quit to try to have a baby, I didn't get my period for a year.

This may seem stupid to say and obvious to some, but there must be different levels of PCOS because I don't know that it has affected me too much other than not being able to conceive (I was pregnant when I was a teenager so I know it's possible) and having irregular periods.

I don't feel bad, I don't have cysts. Am I missing something? I really don't know a whole lot about it, other than knowing that I have it. Where can I get more information?

Thanks.
Jennifer

hey there...welcome...

Don't you just love bone head Dr.'s...I had to push for a diagnosis myself. You are very correct in stating that there are different degrees of PCOS. Not every woman has all of the symptoms of it, and some have them more severe than others. I am glad that the medication you are on is working well for you. Take care.

Hi there,

Truth is with PCOS you are your best resource. You keep on top of things and keep track and ask the questions. You do the research and take control. Signing up for this site is a great step. Lots of helpful people and information. If there is something you need to know or just want to rant...post away!

I was on depo provera before too and it was awful. They should outlaw it.

Good luck!

Hiya Jennifer and welcome to SC!

Actually, you could not have come to a better place to arm yourself with knowledge about PCOS! I suggest that you take some time and read - read - read! In each forum on this site there are "stickies", all of which are full of useful information, so I would start there. I would also definitely continue to read through the posts - you'd be amazed at the number of women who share some of the exact same things that you are going through and you may not have even realized it is PCOS related.

You also had a Q about not having any cysts, well the term "Polycystic Ovarian" is really misleading - you do not have to have cystic ovaries to have PCOS - There are many women, including myself who do not have cysts but we still have PCOS.

Kat also has some wonderful books linked - if you can, I would also recommend reading up on some of them too. Here's the link to that thread. PCOS Books

I wish you the very best - please know that we're all going through the same thing and that we're here for you! If you ever have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to just post it - the women here are pretty awesome!!

Keep posting and see ya around the boards!
