Default New and worried

Hi all. I am Kelly and I was diagnosed with PCOS in Jan of 2003. We were ttc and I switched to a new ob and he diagnosed me and put me on glucophage. I was very lucky I know, and got pregnant that month. When we wanted to ttc again I went back on glucophage which brought on my period and then I conceived the next month. I did not look much more into PCOS other than being my "fertility" problem. I also assumed that I would always need meds to get pg, hence the 3rd baby in 3 years! LOL I had actually been trying to lose weight and after losing a few lbs I found out I was pg. So after I had her, I went back to trying to lose this weight knowing that I was at an increased risk for developing diabetes. I lost 20 lbs after my first pg and then I lost 30 more lbs after my last pg. (A total of 50 lbs overall) I was going along thinking that I was fine. I went to a new gen physician and she told me that I had an increased risk of other conditions due to the PCOS. I was kind of upset that my ob had not stressed how serious things were. But I also was proud of myself for losing all this weight and eating better.
Now a year later I am concerned. I have gained 6 lbs in the last 2 weeks and 12 since january. I have been working out more in the last 6 weeks than I have in awhile and I did not change my eating habits so I am confused and worried something might be going on. That's when I found this site. So now I have some questions if anyone can help me.

1) Is it possible to have a "flare" up of PCOS? Could I suddenly be gaining weight b/c it is "acting up"?

2) Should I be doing something more about my PCOS other than exercising?

I am really happy to have found this board and look forward to meeting all the cysters! Thanks for any input you can offer!

I totally understand what you are saying. I go through this also...I have been riding a rollercoaster since I was diagnosed with PCOS. I will lose a lot of wieght and then it will come back plus some. And this goes on and on for months/years. I recently have been put on aygestin to bring back my periods regularly, the doc said that we have to get those regulated first to get the PCOS under control. Yesterday, I was put on Meformin and that is to try and get some of the weight off and also to regulate my sugars Highs and lows. I dont think the doctors will truly comoe right out and tell you your having flare ups but trust me I know that you do with PCOS. Hang in there.

I forgot to put this in the response i posted before....I have been exercising with a trainer and doing the low glycemic diet and still continually gain weight. It wasnt until my trainer told me hey what is going on here your are working your butt off and i am not seeing results that got me to ask the doctor what the heck is going on...he did a bunch of labs and said it was happening because of my PCOS.

I was diagnosed with PCOS when i was 16 and even though the docs won't ever say it I know that I have PCOS "flare ups". There are periods of time when it seems that everything I eat (healthy or not) sticks right to me. I have more hair growth and worse dandruff...all of the symptoms seem to attack me at once.

Hang in there. PCOS can be scary but its important to find a Dr. that actually KNOWS something about it. Most general dr's know what it is but don't really know how to treat it. I found an endo who specializes in women's medicine/infertility/and PCOS. He has been a great help.

Good luck!
