I am new to the site. I haven't "officially" been dx with PCOS but my sister has and she turned me on to this site. We have the same symptoms. I have one cyst on my left ovary, extra hairiness, deep voice, depression, irregular cycles with heavy bleeding, skin tags, & weight problems in the past but I'm finally getting that down. I also have uterine fibroids that are causing me problems. My period came 1 1/2 weeks early this time and I was really bleeding heavy. The dr put me on bcp on 8/1 hoping to regulate my cycle. I have been bleeding for 18 days straight now and cramping something awful but the dr doesn't seem too worried about it. I'm sure if HE was the one who had been bleeding for 18 days, it would be a different story. I'm just looking for some answers and hoping to finally stop bleeding. Any advice will be appreciated.

Hey. Well I hope your doctor realizes that you are in pain. I dont know if 18 days is healthy first time on bcp. I got mine right away. Im on Necon 1-35 or something like that. However, it wasnt taking care of my problems and so I finally decided to get on metformin also with bcp. It helps a lot. I notice that I dont stay fusterated easily and even though I only got acne once in awhile b4 all the meds i notice i rarely get them now just around my hair line from the heat. I would talk to your doctor about getting on metformin. My doctor told me that bcp wont take care of all the symptoms of pcos. I think I like being on met and bcp then just regular bcp. But talk to your doctor about what is better. Also, met has helped me keep off the 28 lbs (well I did gain some back) but I lost 7 inches around my waist and almost 2 sizes since last april. It really helped me keep it off. If you are still worried about the 18 day period I'd look up your bcp and see the symptoms of just starting it. It could just be your body getting used to it. If you need someone to talk to Im here. And there is a lot of people on here that will support you. Good Luck. x Ashley x

I agree about the met. I took BCP prior to my diagnosis, and it helped me have a monthly period, but the period was always heavy and crampy and full of clots and more often than not I ended up in the ER. Then I found my wonderful dr. and he diagnosed my PCOS and gave me met, and the periods started coming more regularly and they weren't as heavy. The cramps improved too and I rarely have clots now.
I don't know if you've tried this or not, but when I had the cramps so bad I would try to lie down with a heating pad on my stomach and I think that helped the most.
I hope you feel better soon
Hugs
Jenny

Yeah it seems that I've spent half of my adult life curled up on the couch in the fetal position with a heating pad. It's gotten so bad that my husband has started having sympathy pains every month lol. When he starts to feel bad he'll ask me if it's "that time of the month". At least he understands that it's really an ordeal for me.
I finally got to speak to the dr today and he's not worried about the 18 day bleeding. He says to wait until I start my second pack of pills, but shouldn't I be seeing some kind of results after 2 weeks on the bcp? He says to call him back if the bleeding gets any heavier. My mother had this same problem in her early 40's ( I'm 37) and she almost bled to death before they finally did a partial hysterectomy (left her ovaries so no hrt). I informed him of this and I also informed him about my sister's PCOS dx and he doesn't seem to be concerned. Anyone know a good dr in the Bowling Green, Ky area that is familiar with PCOS? Thanks.

So sorry you're going through this w/ the dr. I have a great doctor, I'm up north of you in Champaign/Urbana IL.
When I first started BCP for the heavy bleeding, I took a double dose daily until the bleeding stopped, then continued the pack for the rest of the 28 days. This was per ER instructions, and it was before I found my current dr. and got diagnosed. My dr. has said he wants my periods over within a week, and so far I've not had any trouble w/ that since I found out I had PCOS and took met/ BCP.
I know your fibroid could be causing the bleeding troubles, but some of your other symptoms really seem like it could PCOS. I really hope you are able to see a PCOS-friendly dr. soon so you can start to feel better.
Hugs
Jenny
