I was "diagnosed" with PCOS Feb 2006. My complaint to my GYN was missed periods and then periods that wouldn't end. I also mentioned facial hair and excessive weight gain. An ultrasound revealed cysts on my ovaries. She told me that they didn't need to be removed and it was a fertility issue and prescribed birth control (Yazmine sp??) and Vaniqua for the hair. As an after thought of sorts, she said its called PCOS.
So, I took the pill for a while and discontinued. All symptoms came back but with a vengeance - especially the hair. I took 20 mins to tweeze off all of it from my chin alone!!!
One day, I realized I was overweight, hairy as hell, and hadn't had a period in more than 6 months and decided to do something about it. I started a meal replacement program and remembered what the GYN said and did some research which lead me here.
I must say, I was completely floored by what I read. I felt betrayed by that doctor over a year ago that failed to explain was PCOS really was - if she even knew.
I am using this time that I am on the liquid diet to mentally prepare myself for life with PCOS. I am motivated to get this right because, I feel like I have dodged a bullet by not developing diabetes or some other illness, although my BP readings are on the high side.
The good news is, I have lost 19 lbs and I have started using my elliptical trainer but I need to increase the frequency.
I have been doing alot of reading here and I have purchased some recommended books on IR.
Thank you all so much. I feel that I have a chance to live a healthy life now!!

Thanks for the kind words. I certainly don't have this all figured out but, I feel empowered because I am doing SOMETHING!! Right know, my food choices are very limited. I am working hard to be prepared mentally to meet the food and exercise challenges when I am 100% in the driver's seat.
In that regard, I am looking at buying a rotisserie or a smoker for a healthier food preparation.
Just wanted to say hello and welcome. It is so frustrating that many dr's do not see pcos as a big deal. Glad you're staying positive and being proactive. I"m sure you'll find lots of info and support here!
