Hi Everyone, My name is Rebecca and here is a little of my story. Hopefully someone can help me.
First let me say that I am 5'2" and weigh about 230lbs. My DH and I started TTC about 2yrs ago. We finally went to see a Reproductive Endocrinologist and did the month worth of testing. At the end of the month it was found out that my DH had low sperm count and low motility. It was advised to us that the only way to get pg was to do IVF or use donor sperm. After about a year we decided to try donor through IUI. Went back to RE and was given chlomid and fertility shots(not sure what they were) to increase folicles. The IUI didn't work and we got a BFN. Since it cost about $2000 that try we decided to wait.
We have just moved into a new house(June) and decided we would look for a donor locally instead of buying frozen sperm. I went and bought a fertility monitor to try and do home insemination. By day 22 on the monitor I still hadn't ovulated. Now understand, I have regular periods every 28-31days.
I cramp real bad around the 1st day of my period. My periods have always been heavy the first 2 days and then get lighter for the last 3 days. I do have hair on my neck(but Mom has it too and no PCOS), but not really hair anywhere else but my face that you aren't supposed to have for a woman.
Since by day 22 I hadn't ovulated, I called my RE. He stated since I had PCOS and didn't ovulate, the only way to correct that was to lose weight or pay $1100 month for fertility meds since my insurance doesn't cover fertility.
WHY didn't he tell me this last year when I was in his office. The only thing he said was that being overweight would cause difficulty getting pregnant but not impossible. I am spending money on donor and can't afford to possibly be able to get pregnant. Now everything I am reading scares the living .... out of me. Diabetes, Heart Disease, and whatever else comes from being overweight. I have heard of all the test that need to be run. I have made a DR appt with my regular day and hope to speak with OBGYN today. I also have another name of just an Edocrinoligist to maybe see. Can anyone help me asnwer some of these questions about PCOS and I would like a buddy to speak to.
Thanks for all the great information and help
1. Can you have a normal period and not ovulate every month?

Hi Becca,
Welcome to the site. I am new here too and have the same questions.
I am regular as well, every 28 days and am meeting with an RE for the first time on Thursday to ask the same question about ovulation. I've been taking the ovulation predictor kits for the last 8 months now and definitely see a spike at the expected time too so I don't really understand why/how I couldn't be ovulating. I'll let you know what he says.
Good luck!

I am sure it is quite frustrating to spend so much money and then not get the results you are hoping for.
Well, I am no expert, but I think that it is possible to get AF even if you didn't O. I used to have 40 day cycles. I don't know for sure if I was Oing late, or not at all. I never used a fertility monitor or kept track of temps or symptoms, or anything. We timed BD about 12-15 days after AF, and 12-15 days before the next AF was expected. EACH cycle was a bust, so I was probably not Oing at all, since we got the BFN no matter when we timed the BD.
I think that is what creates cysts, the follical develops, but the egg never gets O'd, the CL might give off progesterone even though the egg never left, which would get AF started, but since the egg never left, it turns into a cyst. As I said, I am no expert, that is just my personal theory.
Maybe this cycle is different form your last cycles. You might just be Oing late this time. Or maybe you O'ed early, what CD did you start using the fertility monitor? I would keep using the fertility monitor until you O or until you get AF. That might give you a better picture of what is happening through out your cycle.
I am sending you a bunch of baby dust to help you along.

Thanks for the reply. I can tell you that I have been using the fertility monitor for the past month. It started having me POAS from day 9. Day 9 showed low fertility.from day 10 until yesterday when I started AF it kept showing high fertility and never peaked. I have been using the CBEFM. I am going to get my blood drawn tomorrow and see what the results come back as. I would also like to get on some kind of eating change as well.
I am just very upset and angry that the doctor didn't tell me last year when we tried doing an IUI that this is what I had. If I had not called him, to find out if I was ovulating last year, I never would have found out. Now we have to start all over again with another doctor. UGHHHH....very frustrating!!

I was just diagnosed with PCOS TODAY and have yet to start treatment.
I have a regular period, though it's very light (lasts about 2 days but it comes every 28-30 days!).
Like you I am also overweight. Although, unlike you I am not trying to have a child. I am sorry you are having so much trouble...
I don't know about you but I find it impossible to lose weight. I mean...I WALK 3.5 miles to work 4 days a week and I still don't lose weight!!!
Do you find it nearly impossible to successfully lose weight, too?
Good luck,
Jen

I have found it almost impossible to lose weight!! I went on a cardio program and ate healthier and it didn't do anything. I think I gained weight. I have been thinking of speaking with my doctor since I have an appt tomorrow to see what he says. Maybe I can get on some kind of program or med to help.
I will let you know what works, if anything. In the meantime keep up the good work with walking.
Hopefully by the test's he runs tomorrow, we can also find out the best way to conceive.
Thanks for all of those that care and are here for us newbies!!!!

It's my belief that my PCOS didn't start until after my son was born. He was a happy accident. One too many eggnogs at the company Christmas party, know what I men, wink, wink.
But, in the 6 years since I have not beein on BCP and we've not always been good about...stuff...and I have not conceived again. It was no big deal because we didn't want another child. But I should have wondered about why we hadn't been caught being careless! Dub!
My brother and his wife had problems conceiving their first. My SIL had something out of whack, not PCOS. She's as thin as a rail. But she conceived with invitro. 10 months after my nephew was born she turned up preggers. Then a couple years later she did it again. Seems a single preggers straightened her out. I still don't understand what was going on with her. But I do remember their heartbreak after 2 years of trying...
So, BEST of luck!
Jen

We thought about doing IVF but since our insurance doesn't cover any of the cost, it is just too expensive. We are getting test done to see if there is anything we can do to help us along. The funny thing I found out is, most insurance companies will cover women who don't want kids, but will not help women get pregnant. STUPID.

Thanks. We also had blood work done the other day and are waiting to hear the results. Hopefully I can then get on some meds that will work and hopefully conceive. Also in the meantime I am trying to lose weight. Need to get out walking or something, but it is so hot here in Texas. Any advise is greatly welcome.
