Hi guys,

I'm new here and I thought i'd tell ya my story.
I live in Dunedin, NZ and im almost 20. I was diagnosed this time last year after one day i woke up and decided the pain i had been in for months was wrong lol up until then it seemed normal. I went to the doc who thought my ovary was twisting so in feb i had a laparoscopy. they found that it wasnt and the only way to explain my pain was that my ovaries were swollen and very irritated - covered in cysts.

At the same time they also put in a merina iud. i have really high blood pressure and i've been told the merina was my only option. It has been working really well - the pain stopped and i havent had a period in six months. my moods seemed to be pretty stable (compared to wht they had been.) I've been trying to lose weight doing vibration training and excercise.

Everything was going well until a few months ago and now it feels like its starting again. My moods are all crazy again, i've started having huge amounts of pain every three or four days and I have no energy. i went to the dr and they tried to find my merina doing an internal but it was nowhere to be seen. Now i have to wait six months just to have a scan to make sure it hasnt moved.

Sorry to rant and rave lol I just wanted to get my story out there and see what feedback u guys have??

Cheers,
Serrayray

Yay! Another Dunedinite! I reckon I should round you all up for a coffee! *grin*

I can't believe you have to wait 6 months for a scan. What I've learnt about the NZ health system is that the squeaky wheel gets the oil - the more you go to your doctor, the more urgent it looks, and the further up the list you go. Be persistant!

haha yeah dunedinites!

I have finally had my scan and guess what?! it looks normal - apart from the pcos and merina! which is great cos i felt like i was making this all up! it's so hard to get anywhere in this health system, and the lady who did my scan was horrible....

how are you going with doctors in dunedin?

I've been quite lucky with doctors here. I go through Student Health and they've all been really knowledgable!

Hey Serayray, are you doing anything else to help with the pcos? Exercise often helps lessen pelvic pain for me :O) As does eating less Gluten (weird I know, and not really related, but its true!)

gluten free? i've never even thought of trying that. what led you there?

When I changed my diet I cut out a lot of carbs - which is turn cut out a lot of gluten without me really realizing. Now when I eat gluten I get sick as a dog. A lot of people on here seem to have some gluten intolerance so its something to keep in mind.

I certainly always used to poo poo Gluten intolerance a bit, but I think we get too much with all the refined carbs we eat.

What has the naturopath put you on? I am always interested to hear about natural remedies!

she thinks the big problem with me is my liver - i have high blood pressure and all in all i'm taking 9 pills from the doctor a day. i've been doing this for years and the way she sees it my liver is having a hard time coping with the excess pills and the hormones. i'm eating antioxidant rich food and am taking a medicine with a mix of herbs - some are for hormones, some ovaries, some my heart muscle and then one to make my medications work more efficiently.

yeah she thinks when i have products high in yeast my system gets irritated and when i think about it its actually true.

hmmm i tired to cut as many carbs out as i could. i've heard so many different stories ya can get a bit lost in it all and not know which way is up sometimes!! lol so i just try to eat as healthy as i can.

Default Awe poos!

I just told my story in another thread! Im also from Dunedin, woohoo!!!
Serrayray - Who is your naturopath?

I was diagnosed in 2004 (i am now 25) and only in the last couple of months, have i really started looking into PCOS and what causes it etc... sounds slack i know, but when i was diagnosed, the doctor told me 'heaps' about it, so i left there thinking there is nothing i can do for it since there is no cure... he didnt even suggest loosing weight or an eating plan!?! And i couldnt go on the pill because of family history of blood clots! About a year later though, i got sick of pimples and facial hair so got a blood test to see how vunerable i was for blood clots and was then put on Estelle-35. Now though, i want to go the natural way since we are planning for babies soon and cant I dont want to be on the pill forever! I have been given Metformin but will not be starting that till after christmas.

Hi Serrayray

I havent found my current doctor too bad, the one that diagnosed me was at student health, then i finish polytech and moved to Arrowtown for a bit. The doctor in Arrowtown was great, then i moved back to dunedin! So my current doc is the one that is getting blood tests done, and i had the ultrasound done back in my polytech days.

But because of the way I was diagnosed, I didnt realise there was a way to get on top of PCOS. I am a bit gutted as I wanted to loose weight for our wedding (which is next weekend!) but I have been refered to a dietician, and get to see her before christmas. From what i believe, i get to see her about 3-4 times (as its free) So after that i might have to sus out the naturopaths around town for something a bit more long-term

Hi Serayray!

I just wanted to say 'hello' I'm not from Dunedin ... but I did live there for 3 years while going through uni

I was diagnosed at 20 as well and I think its great you're dealing with pcos ... I let mine slide for awhile ... about 8 years actually (eek! am I that old?!) because I couldnt take the birth control pill and looking for other alternatives just didnt occur to me!

So well done, keep on trucking, and all the best for the journey.
