My husband and I have been TTC since our marriage last year. I was on Depo for a few years, and decided to take my last shot 3 months prior to our wedding day (March '05). My cycles had never been regular leading up to me taking Depo, so I suppose that is why it appealed to me at the time. (I thought, "Hey, if my periods will go away all together - all the better). Boy was I wrong.
My first cycle after the needle came in September '05. Since then, I've not seen any consistency.
Over the years I've noticed a few things (irregular cycles, painful (crippling) cramps, weight gain, hair growth on my face, increased hair growth on other body parts (hands / arms)) which lead me to think there could be more to it than I think.
October / November '05 I began searching online for ways to increase our chances of getting pregnant quickly. November '05 I began temping and charting. December '05 was the first time I asked my family doctor about things.
She continually put things off, telling me I was young and I needed to relax. As the months went on, I began having cycles lasting into the high 40's (days)... I was sent for blood work at odd times in my cycle, which after further reading I began to question if my doctor was as knowledgeable about this as she claimed.
Finally, last month my doctor agreed to get me a referral to an OB/GYN. Unfortunately, I was not able to get in until October. In the meantime, she sent me for a pelvic ultrasound. (The tech also performed a transvaginal too).
The results seemed to confirm what I thought / felt: The uterus is normal in size measuring 8.2 x 3.3 x 4.8 cm. The endometrium has a normal thickness of 5mm.
Each ovary is well shown. The right has a volume of 12cc and the left 10cc. There are a number of small follicular cysts in each ovary. This is not a classical appearance for polycystic ovarian disease but this is certainly a possibility to be correlated clinically. No free fluid is seen.
SUMMARY: No significant abnormalities are noted. The appearance of the ovaries is reminiscent but not diagnostic of polycystic disease.
I suppose I may be getting ahead of myself by joining and posting, but I have a strong gut feeling that it's just a matter of time before things are confirmed.
In the meantime, I have still been charting and temping. Unfortunately, FF has only detected two ovulations on my cycles this year. Once in January, and then this month. My husband and I BD'd the night before my detected O, but I'm trying not to set myself up for disappointment once again.
Looking forward to meeting new friends and learning more about how to beat this.

I took the Depo shot too, for 1 year following the birth of my second son. I feel like the Depo really "accelerated" my PCOS symptoms, after I came off the Depo shot I didn't have a period for a year, and then I would bleed for a month a time. I tell any woman I know is considering birth control my experience w/ Depo and I have yet to meet a woman who has taken it and liked it.
It took 3 years after Depo to get a PCOS diagnosis and I finally did get pg w/ my daughter a year after my diagnosis (10 months of met too)
Anyway, sounds like you are really informing yourself and taking good care of yourself. Best wishes to you for ttc!
Jenny

Well we have same story in a way. I was also on Depo, and got the symptoms to. I have just been diagnosed with PCOS. My Gyno/fertility specialist took one look at me and my charts and said I have PCOS. I have to go for a HSG soon here and I am nervous about that!! my husband and I going to try to concieve shortly. I know I will need meds so I am going to discuss with my Dr this week.

Thank you for all of the warm wishes. If I had some babydust, I'd share - promise! (Does knowing a bunch of preggo's count for anything?? ).
Jenny, same here about Depo. I've yet to meet anyone who has been happy with it AFTER they were done taking it. While on it, I loved it! I didn't get AF at all! Who could complain about that? And now, man...
Lindsay, I don't want to make light of the HSG test - but I've known a few (from online friendships) who've had it done and I believe they recommended taking an advil or some sort of painkiller prior. You may want to ask... Just to see if it's ok.
((HUG)) to you guys. Thanks again.

Hope
I felt the same way about Depo. I had no periods on it and loved that. I did sometimes get PMS symptoms about the time I would've gotten my period, but no period. But AFTER the Depo, I had no period for about a year still, then I would bleed for a month or more at a time, very heavy with clots. It was so heavy that I would use my son's Pull-Ups, still folded up, as pads because no maxis out there were enough. And these I was bleeding through in an hour.
So glad that time is over!
Lindsay, I hope your HSG goes well. I've never had one, but my sister-in-law (also has PCOS) recommended a painkiller about an hour or so before they do it. Hugs to you, let us know how it goes.
Have a good day
Jenny
