Obviously I'm new to this forum. I found it by googling about PCOS and I see there are a lot of stories here that could help me and hopefully answer some of my questions.
I've been having problems since I was 15. Already then I had irregular periods (sometimes missing for 4 months) and a lot of hair growing where a woman doesnt want to grow hair. My gynecologist gave me Dabroston which helped me get my period back. Didn't mention anything about PCOS back then and since I was only a kid I didn't really think it could grow into such a problem.
Now I'm 23, I had only one period this year, I have hair all over my body except my head where I'm loosing it, I have acne on my chin and back, pelvic pain, even anxiety-don't know if it's caused by PCOS or a result of me knowing I have it. Anyway, have all the usual symptoms except overweight. I was really skinny when I was a teenager, but since I stopped smoking ciggs I gained 10kg in less then a year.
I'm waiting for the results of my hormone levels so I can go to the doc to finally get on some medication. Have to say, I'm not really happy about taking birth pills (I've read that that is the most common way to get things sorted), since I've heard from other girls that they had some awfull sideeffects.
Well, that's it for now till I get acquainted with the rest of the forum
aww, sweetie - try not to be scared. i know it's easier said than done. The battle doesnt 'end' but you can control your pcos - and not let the pcos control you.

1st of all-welcome! I'm a newbie too. You've found a fantastic site (thank GOD for Kat who created it!!!!!!!) and lots of gals who want to help.
Trust me, I was also a scared, crazy woman when I 1st read things on here. So much so that I went to the ER thinking I was having a reaction to my meds when it was actually my bulging disc that flared up again. (I was so bad that my heart was racing, cold sweats..but the back pain wasn't there 100% yet.)
I think the big key is to read all the newbie stuff 1st to get an idea of how different PCOS is for everyone-each case is unique. Also, the meds work so differently for us all. I have had ZERO s/s on met and feel great! It takes time to adjust so breath, relax and try not to worry.

the thing that scared me is that i'll probably be taking some kind of meds for it my whole life. it's always going to make problems. coping with it will probably get easier as time goes by , but at the moment it's a shocker to me.
i also noticed that most of you take several kinds of meds. a few days ago i was under the belief that it can be controled by just, for example, birth controle pills.
Merci, I TOTALLY know how you feel. I have never taken any meds my entire life. Even BC didn't agree w/me. I was completely out of my mind just about a week and a half ago. I was scared to death to think this has no cure, will never, go away even with a hysterectamy (yes, I wanted to do it to make this go away) and I'll be on meds 4 ever.
But after just 1 week on my met, folgard (vitamin) and spiro, I swear I felt like I could climb mount everest. I wasn't tired, grumpy and feeling bloated anymore. I wish now I had these meds 5 yrs ago!
Hang in there-there is light at the end of the tunnel!!!!

That is true for some, but not all. Some women go on medication until their bodies get into the right track and then they manage with diet and exercise. Others are on the medication for the rest of their lives. There are a number of women who have chosen to go the alternative remedies route (supplements, diet, exercise) and have been very successful. It just depends on your preference. KatCarney, for example, has had great success with diet and exercise, that's it.
But what's most important for you to know (and one of the most difficult things to hear) is that it is a life long process. You can get it under control (with or without medication) but you'll never be cured. It just depends on how you want to approach it.
In either case, welcome to SC! You'll find lots of information here to help you out.
