Newbie, found PCO thanks to this board, worried re insurance
I found this board while researching hirsutism. Went back to my dr (she told me last year that the hirsutism probably isn't as bad as I think and to see a dermatologist) and reiterated my concerns that it could be health related. Sure enough, an ultrasound showed fibroids and PCO. I have my follow up with the dr tomorrow and am anxious about the FSH/LH/etc blood test results and what dr's recommendations will be.
I am mainly concerned about having this in my health history files. Current coverage is with a group plan, so no big worries there. HOWEVER I had plans to start my own business soon and am super concerned that I will not be able to find private health insurance when that time comes. Any advice on this before I see the doc on Friday morning?
Keep an eye on the codes that your doctor uses when marking your files. It's PCO "S" that typically gets women into trouble. Make sure your doctor is treating your 'symptoms' not 'the syndrome'.
A few years ago, I switched from being covered by my company's health insurace to private insurance. In the 8 months prior to applying for private insurance, I had to have surgery for my fibroids (requiring 4 days in the hospital), and a trip to the ER prior to that.
When I left my old job, I went on COBRA (expensive, but whatever you do, don't let your coverage lapse - not for even 1 hour - not for even 1 second.)
I had no problem getting private insurance.
My situation certainly won't apply to everyone (or even anyone) but I thought I'd offer it as an example.

Thank you so much for this board and for the thoughtful reply, Kat! I will see if my doc even thinks the PCO = PCOS (right now my only symptom of the "S" is hirsutism, but I don't have the blood test results yet).
Thank you also for your story. It has put me slightly at ease that maybe there will be a way that I can leave my job. And not to worry, I am a huge believer in always having health insurance. I even paid my outrageous COBRA payments when I was 22 and fit as a fiddle, just in case ya know? I will never go without it: hence the concern about future application denial.
