I'm new to SoulCysters, but not new to PCOS. I was diagnosed in 2004 - finally! - and was immediately put on metformin, flutamide, and yazmin (insulin resistant). At that point I was 235 pounds, and the drugs helped me lose 25 but then I plateaued. Since then I have struggled to lose that extra 80 pounds. I've been overweight and dieting/eating healthy since I hit puberty, so that was nothing new. Atkins, SouthBeach, detox, rabbit food (haha), nothing worked. And I was exercising but just gaining muscle mass from all that extra testosterone once they took me off flutamide.
So, I've worked with a naturopath in the last 6 months who had me do a 6 week detox (no sugar no grains) and then a round of hCG (Human chorionic gonadotropin) injections for 45 days according to this strict diet etc. hCG is a natural hormone that you get when you're pregnant (it's the pee-on-the-stick hormone) and it's been studied for decades, used in the mainstream mostly as a fertility therapy with other drugs. My naturopath explained it as the balancing hormone, it makes your weight and other hormones balance to where they should be. I finished it all in mid-February.
The results - I lost 40 pounds and my testosterone and blood sugar levels are now in the high end of the normal range instead of high. I haven't used metformin or flutamide since January, and I just stopped taking Yazmin at the beginning of March - and in the last three weeks have gained 13 pounds of water weight. Ugh. But, it's better than being on BC, and I just took a water pill so hopefully I'll start peeing soon.
Has anyone else tried the hCG treatment? How has the upkeep been? I feel like I'm driving blind, but so far so good.
I just tried the HCGdiet. I am one of the very few that had an adverse reaction. I did follow it precisely. I hope from the diet was yes to lose weight but the bigger hope fore me was that my Naturopath said it most often resets your endocrine system and that I wouldn't need to take hormones any more. That was the big hope! But, I got very ill on it. This doesn't happen to most people and I wish it would have worked for me. If you are thinking about this diet my Doctor ordered a CA125(?) It is a tumor marker for ovarian cancer. He did this to make sure I currently didn't have tumors or the tendency to get tumors. because he said that the HCG can hyperstimulate the tumor growth. So, If I were to start this that would be an important thing to do.
HCG good - yes for most people
Hope this helps - Julie
I did the HCG diet last October - I followed the 500 calorie diet, no cheating. In fact, I rarely at the alotted 500 calories. It was one of the most difficult things I've ever done - especially since everyone around me was still eating normally. I lost 20 pounds and have kept it all off. I have a friend who has lost over 35 pounds doing the diet as well. It works - the key, I think, is to plan out all your meals a week at a time - then all you have to do is grab your lunch and go. I also have a recipe book that follows the diet - if you want a copy of it, just let me know.
Good luck!
