Hi, y’all. New here obviously. I am 32 years old with a DH and a 3 year old step-daughter. No kids of my own yet. I have never had a regular period in my life. I got my first period just before my 15th birthday. I didn’t have another one for 7 years. My first symptoms of PCOS were the lack of periods, skin tags popping up all over my neck and darkened skin on the sides of my neck and under my arms. Within a few years I started growing a beard. I mentioned this throughout the years to different doctors and they just said to lose weight, that was the problem. Finally in 2000 I went to see my first OB-GYN. I told him I read about PCOS and wanted to be tested since I had many of the symptoms. He took some blood, did LH, FSH, etc. and ordered an ultrasound. The blood came back “normal” according to him, and the ultrasound showed “lumpy” ovaries. He said I did not have PCOS, should take some BCPs and lose weight. The BCPs made me suicidal. After three months I quit taking them. A couple years later I saw a GP and explained everything all over again. He did more blood tests, that he said were “normal”. He sent me on my way with a prescription of Provera. I became suicidal again. Discontinued the medication the same month. I gave up and worried about the diabetes and heart problems coming my way. In 2002 after fighting with my new general doctor about diabetes, he finally ordered an A1C. He humbly had to tell me a few days later that I was indeed diabetic and sent me to an Endocrinologist. Around the time I was diagnosed with diabetes I started spotting daily. Spotting enough to be a nuisance. Day after day it never went away. I made the appointment with the Endo and off I went. The first Endo was a jerk. He told me to loose weight and I would be fine. I WAS DIABETIC and PISSED and tired of settling. I made my own appointment with another Endocrinologist and also an OB-GYN. My appointment with the new Endo went very well. She was very smart and immediately got me started on testing my blood, had me meet with a dietician, signed me up for education classes and evaluated me for PCOS. She said she believed I had it based on my physical symptoms and put it down as my secondary diagnosis. She was also concerned about the sudden onset of spotting after years of nothing. She ordered an endometrial biopsy which came back normal. She told me she would manage my diabetes and I should see an OB-GYN as well. The OB-GYN took a thorough history, did a total body exam, ordered an US and blood work and told me that my blood work was normal, but the US showed “cystic” ovaries and I have every physical characteristic of someone with PCOS. She said she doesn’t care what the blood does or does not show, she is convinced I have it and prescribed Prometrium to start off. I became suicidal again and could not tolerate it. She started me on Metformin as I was controlling my diabetes with diet and exercise. I started the Metformin and slowly increased my dose. After 2 years of daily spotting it finally stopped. The first month after Metformin I had a 7 day long, heavy, cramp ridden period. The next month at the same time, the same thing happened. It was a miracle! Then the next month, the cramps started at the same time, but no period, same the month after that. Then it all just stopped again. I have a follow up soon with my OB, so I don’t know what she will say about everything. She did say the Metformin would lessen the facial hair and it has. She also said it could take up to a year for the periods to come back or be regular and it hasn’t been a year yet so I am still hopeful. My new Endo is a wonderful blessing as well (the last Endo that helped diagnose me moved away). He started me on Byetta last Friday. I don’t know if that will help with the PCOS but it helps tremendously with the diabetes. Lots of days I am still angry about all of it and how it may have been avoided if they would only have listened. Some days I’m fearful of my chances of ever having or carrying a baby to term. Most of all I’m just thankful that someone finally listened. I’m glad to be here.
Boy, it sounds like you have been thru hell and back with Dr's. I'm glad you found someone you like and can trust. I know you said the bcp made you suicidal but is it possible at all to try different ones. There are so many out there. I am taking ortho tri-cyclen lo. It is a low dose of bc because years ago, I would get very sick, headaches and vomiting if I took them, but so far knock on wood, I am fine on a low dose.
So sorry to hear what you've been through with the other docs, but I'm glad you have a good one now. That matters a lot!
I got pregnant on met! I hope that encourages you! I saw some improvements w/ my period the first month after I started met, but it took a few months before my cycle was really "normal" (or normal for me anyway!) For me the best dose was 1500 mg.Hang in there, I hope it gets better for you.
We're here for you cyster
Hugs
Jenny
