Hi, I've just been diagnosed...and am feeling relieved and overwhelmed at the same time. Have had weight issues since my early 20's. Last year I started exercising 7-8 times a week, initially I lost weight then, nothing! I found out about PCOS online, and went to the doctor and asked to be tested...so here I am.
My doctor put me on metformin, but I have not seen an endocrinologist yet. Will the metformin help me lose weight? I am still exercising 7-8 times a week (4 cardio, 3 weight train, sometimes pilates). I still need to lose at least 100 pounds.
I am also curious about all the different diets that are recommended. As a carb addict I just have no idea where to start. The thought of going on an Atkins like diet terrifies me!
Personally, I loved Atkins and I hem and haw over going back on it once I'm done having kids and breastfeeding. You never know how you'll like it until you try!!

HI Kerrie and welcome! I just want to tell you congrats on your diagnosis. I think we have all been overwhelmed and relieved at FINALLY getting a diagnosis. The good thing is you have a network of women going through the same thing. You can workout to your hearts desire and to the ends of the earth, but until you get your blood sugar balanced, you're just running in circles. Don't get me wrong, the exercise is great for your heart, but you won't be losing weight. There are a lot of options and obviously the right diet is up to you. Personally, the dr. told me low carb/low fat is the way to go with PCOS. We have a tendency to have higher tryiglycerides, so we need to stay away from the fatty, red meats, which Atkins promotes. That being said, I am an advocate for the atkins diet for immediate weight loss. I am on that now. Previously I was on it for 6 weeks and lost 25 pounds. It's not an option that's right for me for life. Lowering your blood sugar and keeping it stable is going to go far for you, which means getting rid of the sugar and refined carbs-good bye french fries, bread and pasta. The medication that I enjoy is Metformin. It helps stablize your blood sugar, allowing your body to work the way it's supposed to and not making tons of extra insulin, turning that into fat. Take some time and go to the local library and get lots and lots of literature on PCOS, and Type 2 diabetes. Read and study, as well as visiting with your doctor and other ladies who have PCOS. Soon enough, you'll get an answer that's right for your lifestyle

Hey, I'm new also, and I've struggled with weight issues. It's really hard for me to get on a low carb diet ever since I had been diagnosed. I do some jogging and situps/pushups but haven't lost any weight. I've been on Met for almost 2 months now. I hope your success is better than mine! WELCOME!

Hi, I'm new here too. I was Dx in 2005, I stopped taking the pill to get pregnant & didnt get my period for 7 months. I always thought that it was the pill which made me gain so much weight, about 50 lbs, but it is the PCOS! Anyway I started taking Metformin & lost over 35 pounds (dont know for sure cause I didnt have a scale. The first time I got weighed was when I was pregnant). I've always gotten moderate exercise but I didnt "diet" at all. The Met made me completely lose my appetite so I dont know if you'd call that "dieting". NOTHING sounded good ever so I barely ate.
I've had a baby & I'm back down to pre-pregnancy size, I did Nutrisystem which really worked. (I'd still like to lose 10-15 more lbs) I'm taking Met again but it doesnt seem to be having the same effects on my appetite, weight loss, etc. Dont really know why??
Good luck!!

Congrats on your weight loss success. Sometimes as our bodies get used to medications, we don't feel some of the side effects as stong as we did in the beginning. Way to go though!

Now that I think about it, lots of ladies have no appetitite when starting met. Wish that were my case.
