I just moved to beautiful WA state all the way from GA, where I grew up. My husband is in the Navy and that's why we moved. Anyway, I just had my first visit with a new gynocologist because my periods have been strange lately. I had been on BCP since I was about 16 and had regular periods on them. Well I went off the pills in early July because I felt like my body needed a break, NOT BECAUSE MY HUSBAND AND I ARE TRYING TO BE PREGNANT. Sorry, that just seems to be the only concern among PCOS women and it frustrates me. We want kids in few years, NOT NOW. I'm just trying to be healthy and feel like myself again. So ever since I went off the pills, my periods seem to come at the right time every month but they are light and only last about 2 days. So this new gyno. (not even actually a gyno, she's a nurse practicioner but has Dr. in her name) runs some tests: pregnancy, thyroid, ovarian hormones. Well I'm not pregnant, my thyroid is normal, but my ovarian hormones are completely whacked! She tells me I've got PCOS and so I'm going in to talk to her on Monday. She wants to either put me back on BCP or start me on Provara. I do not want to take Provera because I do not want to ruin my skin and gain weight! I know this seems silly and selfish to only be concerned about my appearance but I'm very self-conscious.
I have many of the symptoms of PCOS but I also do not have many of them. I have all of the mental/emotional ones: depression, fatigue, moodiness, etc. But physically I'm only about 10 ibs. heavier than I should be. My skin is perfection (please don't hate me). I don't have dark facial hair. Though I do have to shave everyday cause I am hairy! LOL I do however, have dark hair around my nipples and my naval. Also, my periods do exist but they just aren't like they used to be.
Do you all think I really have PCOS? I mean, couldn't it just be a side effect of going off the pills? I asked the doc this and she said no, it's not just from coming off the pills.
Also, why does this doc only seem concerned about trying to help me become pregnant when I'm ready and not my general health? There's a lot more to PCOS than just infertility! Another thing, is hypoglycemia a symptom of PCOS? Cause if I don't eat every few hours, I'm a real *****! LOL
There is a lot of concern with women with PCOS about infertility because in my opinion it's the most devastating symptom.
It's not side effects of going off the pills for sure. As for your doctor helping you become pregnant refer to the first statement. When I found out I had PCOS I was terrified that I'd never have children.
I would definitely reconsider the Provera. If your periods are light or you're having other issues with them you could be at risk for endometrial cancer and other issues.
Also if you don't want to take BCP again make sure you make a firm stand on that. I don't want to take them, but my doctor has somehow talked me into it and wants me to stay on it for like a year minimum.
I'm no expert of course.
I'm not trying to overrule what anyone else says, but... I have heard of people that had light periods when they come off of them.
You might need to find a different doctor or even go to the local Health Department!
Hope this helps!

If you want more attention to your overall health, you should be talking to your GP or an endo.
As for your diagnosis, you might want to ask the gyn the specific criteria he/she used as a basis for your diagnosis.
ever green - it is not the number one priotrity for ppl wit pcos to get preg! it jsut so happens a lot of women find out the have pcos due to problems WHEN trying to get preg - just unlucky like that!!
i am ttc and my #1 priority is to get my health back to hwere it should be and my weight back down! and i sooooooo know what u mean about the eatting bit lol im the same!!

That's one of the tricky things with PCOS - everybody's symptoms vary in degree and which ones they have. Many are thin without hair growth but may have some underlying concerns. My sister has it as well as I but hers (she's younger) is more severe in some areas than mine...it also changes as you age so your symptoms now may change in ten years. It is an important diagnosis as it has very serious consequences like heart disease and high blood pressure. If you aren't sure or question the diagnosis, there is a lot of information out there and on this site. Go to your doctor with questions -- if they blow you off, get a new one. Your health is so important and make sure your doctor treats it that way as well.
P.S. I had to tell my doctor a number of times that fertility was not my concern but my health was. It turns out, he had marked my file as interested in fertility and kept basing his treatment on that.

Blood sugar issues can definitely be related to PCOS. I used to have lots of problems with low blood sugar before my diagnosis. My doc put me on metformin and that has helped a lot. My symptoms: irregular heavy periods, thinning hair, dark patches (AN) around my armpits, neck and breasts, depression, weight gain. It's so true that PCOS affects each woman differently.
Using a low-carb diet and making sure I have snacks w/ protein helped me with my blood sugar. I also take cinnamon capsules.
Don't be sorry if you need to rant, that's what we are here for.
Hugs
Jenny
