Question Newbie...need some input on WLS....

Hello everyone,

I have been lurking around on here for a year now. You guys are AWESOME!! It's good to know I'm not alone in the world...and there are many inspirational stories.

Here's a quick rundown on me...I am 30 years old. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 21 years old. I have all the classic symptoms that go along with it. I am 5'7 and 305 pounds. As you all know...it has been pretty much impossible to lose weight. I have tried EVERYTHING! I have decided after alot of thought that WLS surgery is a must for me.

So here is my question: Anyone out there familiar with the Duodenal Switch? I was pretty set on the RNY, but the DS seems to have a more long term weight loss reputation. If you are IR is it still successful? I feel so overwhelmed with all the info out there. Some people do well, some people don't. I am not a big eater...portion control is not my issue. All the weight makes it hard to even walk far, and I need to get to the point where I can MOVE!! I just want to be as HEALTHY as possible.

ANy help and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Laura

I know of one lady who occasionally posts to the WLS Divas thread (under the D&E buddies forum) who had the DS and I know of one lady IRL who's had it done. I know that with the DS you'll be able to eat more quantity of food than I can (I had RNY) but you'll also absorb less nutrients and will have to take more vitamins as there is more bypassed than with the RNY. According to my surgeon the DS has the highest risk of long term nutritional deficiencies which is why he does not do it. Anyway as far as the diabetes and IR goes I'm not entirely sure how it does with the DS. If you'd like my experience with IR/Diabetes and RNY I'd be happy to answer. Good luck in your WLS journey!!
