Heeey Cysters!

This forum is a great source of information for people like me looking for some answers.

I've just come out of hospital after a 5 day stint for an agonising pain in my lower right side and pelvic area. The doctors were unable to diagnose the problem, but ruled out my appendix and having any kidney/gall stones. I advised them I had PCOS (diagnosed at 16, now 23) but they didn't seem too concerned about this.

They have sent me home with pain relief and asked me to consult my GP. I was bitterly disappointed with their support and felt a little insulted that they hadn't bothered to carry out further checks on my ovaries was an ultrasound at least.

What I wanted to ask you is if you have any of these similar symptoms, what you did and what, if anything, resolved the issues;

*Severe pain in lower right hand side of stomach and pelvic area
*Lower back pain, stemming from the pain in my stomach
*Bloating
*Sickness (although not sure if this was from the pain or morphine in A&E)

It might also be worth noting that I have not had a period for well over a year now, since my GP took me off my contraceptive pill to regulate my cycles.

Any information that you can share would be greatly appreciated, I look forward to hearing from you.

They didn't do an ultrasound to at least look at the gallbladder? And it would have checked to see how your ovaries were doing and if you have a bunch of cysts right now that were causing the pain. Poor oversight on the doctor's part.

I went through a brief period of bad cramping when I was around your age, and my ob/gyn did the ultrasound that just showed a lot of cysts covering my ovaries, not a major cyst causing the pain. Get a referral to an ob to see if she can help you instead. Some doctors don't like their patients going very long without periods and will give a rx to start every few months or keep you on bcp. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

It has been a terrible oversight by the gynaecologist. I stayed on a gynaecology ward, yet was only seen once by a specialist the night before I was due to leave.

On my discharge papers from hospital, all it states is 'no surgical or gynaelocological cause for pain identified' - This makes me laugh and cry at the same time!!! How can they come to that conclusion without doing a thorough consultation?!

I'm going to see my GP tommorrow morning on an emergency appointment to see if this can be resolved. He originally referred me to the specialist who diagnosed my PCOS, so he is aware of the case.

I will make it clear I wasn't happy with the hospitals response and go from there - Sorry for the venting, frustrated and fed up!!

I had a horrible pain in my lower right pelvic area that radiated to my back and down to my thighs. It felt like someone would stick a knife in me....well after months of pain...they did a laproscope on me and found out my ovary was caught on tissue in my body....so it was hooked inside my body..and everytime I moved it would pull the ovary. After they fixed it the pain went away. I hope this isn't what you have...but I wanted to throw it out there as a possible cause for the pain. Good luck!

Years ago I experienced similar pain that was incredibly debilitating. At first I thought it was just a horrible cramp; someone else had suggested it could be a urinary tract infection. Once the pain was too much to take I finally got to the urgent care clinic in my university at the time. Turns out I had what they refer to as ovarian torsion - literally one of my ovaries had twisted around, cutting off the blood supply. I had surgery that night to correct it. Came to find out that if it had remained untouched much longer the ovary basically would have died due to the lack of blood flow, and they would have removed it. Apparently this normally is caused by the weight of a cyst, but they didn't see any such thing on mine. It was just enlarged, which I now know is due to PCOS. I had never heard of ovarian torsion before this and have never heard anyone else refer to it again.

There was one other time many years later that I felt pain very similar to what I'd been through with the torsion. It went away after just an hour or so, but I was still freaked out. So I went to the gyno, but she didn't see anything wrong. Said it could just have been a ruptured cyst. Who knows.

I'd be curious to know if anyone else has ever dealt with this. I would be surprised if it's what you have, though - I don't think the pain would either go away or be at all bearable if your ovary wasn't getting blood. Maybe there's something to this ruptured cyst business. I hope someone will be diligent with you and help figure it out. There's nothing more frustrating than getting NO answers!
